Questions and Answers

PERFORMANCE TO THE CORE

What’s the main purpose of the core and what’s it made of?

In designing a golf ball core we’re looking to have it return a tremendous amount of energy when a force is applied to it. The core is made primarily from Polybutadiene, a synthetic polymer rubber material. It’s a very resilient material so it recovers quickly when a stress is applied to it, like the impact of a golf club.

The core is the center-most component and engine of the golf ball.

What is the core formulation?

Core formulation is the very beginning process in golf ball manufacturing. The formula is a precise recipe of raw materials, which includes a dozen or so ingredients. The room's temperature and humidity are controlled, each ingredient is carefully measured, and the timing of the process is critically important, so that each batch is both to our exact tolerance levels, and consistent from one to the next.

What was the process involved in getting to the performance benefits of the new Pro V1
and Pro V1x?

In talking to players, we learned they were looking for more spin on scoring shots, however, they didn’t want to give up any control throughout the bag or distance off the tee. In golf ball design, separating short game performance from long game performance is no easy task. In the case of Pro V1 and Pro V1x we designed hundreds of prototypes with different combinations of the core formula ingredients, and different ways to mix the core formula. In our laboratories, we constructed the best of those prototypes and put them to the test with our robots in Titleist Performance Centers.

We took the best of the best prototypes back to the players and confirmed that we had delivered on the optimal spin and control they were asking for, along with more speed off the tee. How did we give players even more than they thought possible? Because we own our plants and every step of our manufacturing process, we’re able to reexamine everything, scrutinize every detail, and exhaust every possibility. In doing so, nothing is missed and often, like in the case of the 25 Pro V1 and Pro V1x, performance breakthroughs happen.
