Recently I have been going through some swing changes with my coach and have only been working with my irons. As the lessons progressed I started to find that I was finding my irons to feel heavy in my hands. I tried out a couple other types of irons and found them to be easier to swing, they felt lighter. For the first time since I bought the irons I thought maybe it was time for a change. When starting to look in to new irons I realised that my AP1 irons had true temper dynamic gold s300 shafts in them. When asking the club fitters about this they said that most had SL300 and the new ones have XP95s. this is quite a change in the weight of the shaft. Is this the heavy feeling im feeling (especially in my long irons, I know the clubs get lighter as they get lower but this is just what im finding)? Is there a big difference in club head weight from AP1 to AP2 or even CB to MB ? would just changing the shafts in my clubs make the difference?

Tyler...  The feel of a club is important and is something that is specific to each player. I agree that a change in shafts may do the trick for you if you don't want to put out the green backs for a new set.

One thing I will question is your statement that the clubs get lighter as they get lower.

I was recently testing out the swing weight of my clubs and had to measure them. Interestingly enough I found the exact opposite in that my clubs got heavier as they got lower.

    Here are my weights

    3 iron – 388 grams

    4 iron – 399 grams

    5 iron – 404 grams

    6 iron – 408 grams

    9 iron – 428 grams

    Pw    -    431 grams

My irons have the Tour AD 65i graphite shafts and I have recently re-gripped with the Golf Pride CP2 oversize grips.

Obviously since the shafts are shorter, the AP1 heads must get heavier as the loft increases.

    Tyler,

The feeling of the club could relate to the difference in shaft.  However, with regards to swing weight (how heavy the club feels) there are different variables that play an impact on this.  This includes the shaft, the length of the shaft (longer shaft would "feel" heavier), grip (heavier grip will make the club "feel" lighter), grip size.

The S300 would swing weight out a little heavier than the XP95 but again there are different variable in that.

As for the differences in heads, in a stock format the AP1's are D1 and AP2/CB/MB are D2 (heavier feeling).

Changing the shafts would change the swing weight slightly but adding a heavier grip will be one way to make the club feel lighter.
