Okay - with the official 2015 golf season behind us it is time to reflect on the year and see how we did.

Each of us sets some sort of goal as we start the year and as we all know, only by reviewing our results can we measure our success and help us focus on our areas for improvement.

    Let me start...

    1. Short Game: (Pass)

I wanted to improve my short game and in particular my putting. Prior to 2015 I was averaging 34 to 38 putts per round. I recall many times in earlier years where I shot 80 with 40 putts and would kick myself for that. This year I worked hard on my practice around the chipping green which got me closer to the pin on a more regular basis. I also added a Scotty Cameron in my bag and now my putting average is down significantly. I now average between 30 and 34 putts per round which has helped me achieve my next goal.

    2. Handicap: (Pass)

One of my goals for 2015 was to maintain my handicap at an 8, or lower it by a stroke or two. With all the practice improving my short game, I actually got as low as a 4 for a little while and spent most of the year as either a 5 or a 6.

    3. Practice with a purpose. (Fail)

I also wanted to spend time on the range specifically practicing with a focus on grooving my swing for more consistency. On this one I have to grade myself a fail. I played golf with the gang on average 3 to 4 times per week so as a result my time on the range was used primarily to warm up and stretch rather than groove a swing. Maybe next year? I know I have a tendency to pull hook with my irons when under pressure, so I definitely need to work on that for 2016.

In the end, it was a FANTASTIC year. I carded over 90 rounds, made some new friends, added some new Titleist products to my bag, came in 4th in my Club Championship, and  most importantly did it all with a smile !!!

So - How did you do this year ?

    Hey Mark...

Often goals in golf are treated like many New Years Resolutions. - starting with good intentions, but forgotten as we get caught up in the thrill of playing the game through the summer.

Did you set any goals at the beginning of the year? If so - how did you make out?

I had set a goal of breaking 80. I almost did it.....shot 83, 82 and 81 several times and scored an 80 once. There was always that one hole that I messed up on that cost me. My short game needed to be better so next season that's what I will devote my practice time too. That sub-80 round was so close I could taste it. Next year.....

    Hey Darius great topic,

    1. Ball flight (pass)

Most improved part of my game, my driver and irons has gone from a slice/fade to a nice draw which has greatly improved my length and accuracy .

    2. Chipping (fail)

I purchased some new vokey wedges to go along with my AP1s at the end of the year, so it is improving. I just need to practice it more with more consistency.

    3. Putting (pass)

I stopped rotating out my 5 Scotty's. Just concentrating on one and my stroke seems to have helped.

    4. Handicap (pass)

Lowered mine from 16 to 14. Also played 10 more rounds this year.

    Thanks for posing the question

    Hey Darius,

My goal for the year was to change my mental approach to the game.  I tried to concentrate on playing each hole like it an individual game.  On each tee box, I wanted to forget about what happened on the last hole (good or bad), and start fresh... plan how to make par, and execute that plan to the best of my ability, and accept the result of each shot.  I know I have the ability to par every hole out there, I just need to go out and do it.  Somehow, breaking it up into 18 little objectives seems more manageable.

I rate myself as a pass (barely) on that goal.  I shaved a stroke off my index, which isn't a lot, but being low 9s feels somehow way cooler than low 10s...  My scoring consistency is improved.  I'd have to check my records, but I feel like I had fewer blow-up holes.  They still happen, but not because I'm trying to force a miracle to compensate for some disaster that happened two holes ago, and I think that's made a difference.

    Regards,

    Great plan Kevin...

I like your idea of taking each hole as an individual target. Your closing notes about not trying to force a miracle is a good one. A wise player once once quoted... "Never follow a bad shot with a stupid shot."  I used to do that, and still have on the odd occasion when trying to thread a shot between the trees instead of taking the big number out of play and taking the sure shot back into the fairway. Smart golf can make a big difference !

Thanks for your feedback. I think I will give your "One hole at a time" concept a try next season :)

    Darius
