  1. I am 65 years old and have regular shaft on my D12 driver. Just wondering if I might get more distance with a softer flex shaft. My swing speed is around 80.

Hi! I think your situation is one that all golfers confront at least once -- namely, how to get some more distance. Reading your situation, I would ask if you have been fitted for your driver by a certified Titleist fitter?

I ask the question because a proper fitting with a Titleist fitter will give you access to many different shaft combinations and depending of the fitter - also access to a launch monitor for feedback on your tee shots.

I have gone through quite a few fittings already so I will share from my own experiences -- there are many factors that contribute to distance off the tee besides just shaft selection. Some of these include club head/swing speed, launch angle, angle of attack, club path, efficiency (smash factor), and of course environmental conditions.

So given all of these different factors, it is possible that changing shafts in your driver could help you generate additional swing speed/club head speed at impact which would translate generally to more distance. You can also gain distance by improving your efficiency (ie: smash factor) by transferring more energy into the ball at impact which also leads to more distance.

So I would suggest that you go back to your fitter or if not, go find a certified Titleist fitter and go through a session with them to check your existing club set up and see if possible changes to your equipment will help. Also, if they use a launch monitor like the Trackman - you should be able to get some great feedback on your swing mechanics too. It's a lot to think about, but if you're willing to put the time and energy into it, you could probably succeed in optimising your swing and distance off of the tee!

    Hi Emarish,

In general, a softer shaft can help launch the ball higher and add spin. If you feel that would help you gain some distance, it might be worth a shot!

To make sure you are getting the best performing driver for your game, I would suggest seeking help from a Titleist Certified Fitter. They will help you find the best driver and shaft combination to maximize your distance.

    Thanks,

Nice to see you here on the discussion forum.
I have gone for various fittings for all of my clubs except for my putter. In my experience, each fitting was well worth while as I knew that when I left I had the details needed to purchase the correct head/shaft combination. During the fitting for my driver, it was quickly decided that the D2 was the head I needed more than the D3. The gentleman at the Titleist National Fitting Centre (Chris) changed shafts on the head multiple times before we found the one that maximized my spin rate, launch angle, ball speed, control, and ultimate distance. FYI, I am also in my 60's with a swing speed of around 92mph. The shaft I ended up with was to my surprise a stiff flex. I understand there are more things involved in selecting the correct shaft apart from just the flex. Things like kick point and shaft weight play heavily in finding the correct shaft.
In my opinion, based on my experiences, it would be well worth while to arrange for a fitting with a certified Titleist fitter to make sure you get the right shaft so you can get the most out of your driver with your swing :)
