My buddies and I started going to Michigan's Treetops Resort 3 years ago when we turned 50, and we have gone back every year since. This year, we increased our numbers from 4 to 8 people. The courses at Treetops are amazing, tough but fair. I am an 8 or 9 handicap, and from the white tees in previous years my scores would range from 78(low the first year on the Fazio course) to 86 on the Signature course. I shot 81 both years on the Masterpiece, making several one putts). This year, I am not sure what they are trying to accomplish. My buddies don't golf all the time, but they can shoot in the high 80's, low 90's as a rule, and sometimes on courses at Treetops they fight to break 100, as there is not much room to hit stray tee shots. However, the Fazio course was set up for their pro's men's league the day we played it, and I shot 97 and never lost a ball. My buddies were all over 100, except for 1 other guy. The greens were set up with unfair pin positions where you could not keep the ball on the green. I had 39 putts. So it leaves me to ask: Treetops what are you trying to do? Most resort courses are set up so the guys have a great time, drink a few beers and enjoy the company. We were fighting to save bogey on almost every hole. The company was great, but it was not much fun. In fact, a couple guys want to start looking at other golf destinations that will be more enjoyable. I know I am not a PGA player, but I can make my way around a golf course, and this was beyond tough. Really disappointing actually. The Masterpiece on the last day was better, the greens were much more fair, but we played in 30 mph winds, so the scores were still higher than last year. I left feedback for Treetops saying that there courses were too tough. People won't want to play them. We drove 5 hours to shoot 100. It is going to be difficult to convince them to go back there next year. If they only want to cater to championship golfers the market is not very big.
