Hello Team Titleist! Just got back from a Driver TrackMan session at my local range and just was curious for some thoughts from the eyes here at TT.

To sum myself up as a golfer... I am a 6 hcp and currently play 712MB's, DG X-100, 1/2" Long, 1 Degree Flate, 2 Degree's Strong.  910D3 8.3 Titleist AhinaX tipped 1", surefit set on D1 setting.

I am a good ball striker and played for HS and College. I have always hit a very high ball.  My irons have helped my ball flight down some but still not as low as I feel it should be.  I can live with my current iron ball flight but would not mind slightly lower flight.  Was looking to try some C-Taper X's to see how they react to my swing.

My numbers today with the Driver were consistent and I am looking to try a different shaft.

    116 Clubhead Speed

    162 Ball Speed

    14.9 Smash Factor

    Launch 11

    Spin 3400

The made for Titleist Ahina X tipped one inch that I currently play is a  good feeling shaft and a good weight for me and my swing. I need to knock the spin off my Driver as it is to high and I suffer on windy days.  I would not want to go with a heavier shaft in my driver but want a shaft that is going to spin less.  On the Titleist fitting chart the OBAN Devotion 6 launches/spins low(on a robot).  How does that shaft compare to my tipped Ahina?  If trying the OBAN shaft should I tip it also? I understand getting to a fitter with many shafts to try is the best option but with current work schedule and no fitter local with the shafts I need to try what should I put into my 910 to test?  Thoughts from the experienced fitters on this board would be great. Thanks In Advance.

Hi. I really am not trying to discredit anyone, but Firstly I have noticed some discrepencies with your "launch Monitor" figures. A swing speed of 116 and ball speed of 162 does not give a smash factor of 1.49. If you are sure these figures are what the fitter says were on the launch monitor, then, once again, there seems to be a problem with the calibration of the launch monitor, as those figures simply don't match up. I think, before, advising on shafts, I would advise going to another fitter and ask if and when their launch monitor was calibrated. I am afraid this a common problem with launch monitors. I hear so many stories of people saying they swing at high swing speeds, simply because, thats what the launch monitor says. Treat these figures with a huge pinch of salt, they are often jacked up for a good reason, to massage the male ego's unfortunately. As I said, my advice would be to go to another fitter and ask him/her when their launch monitor was last calibrated. Secondly, don't just go on figures, look at your ball flight, and treat that as just as important.

    Jason,

I must say,  I did not ask when last the Trackman was calibrated. The numbers I posted were written down for me at my request.  I am sure the numbers are what was shown on screen.  I do not know enough about Trackmans to know/realize that those numbers do not add up.  Ashame to be told they are not proper numbers.  Thanks for the info.

Ball speed potential in the 170 mph range is a very fun fitting process.  There aren't many places that have options for you to properly test and get fit based on trial.  The mistake I have made many times myself was ordering based on what I think I need.  Looking at shaft specs and seeing what Tour players play never worked.  You sound like a serious player, so I would recommend asking Cathi and Cameron where you need to go that has the most options for you.

    Joe,

Cathi has always been so amazing with helping me!!! I hate to always bother her with questions as I am sure her inbox is full of them daily.  Just thought I would post this with hopes of thoughts from people in my same ball park with swing speed and flight, and fitters that have experience.

Finding a fitter that has many X-stiff shafts to get some solid numbers with is going to be limited to Titleist in MA or Cali and the regional fitting centers.  My work schedule does not allow for such travel to make to one of the centers.

Looking over the shaft chart and seeing the Oban Devotion 6 so low on the chart makes me wonder if it is worth a try. A upper 60gram shaft in X-stiff and that low launch/spin?  Picking one up used or even purchasing from Titleist new is my option.

More so looking for advice on which shaft to look for and tinker with really.

Hey, this is definately not your fault in any way. Many launch monitors are simply calibrated or jacked up to suit all our egos. But its definately not your fault. I fear that some fitters prey on our lack of understanding. To give you an idea, if you multiply your swing speed by your smash factor, the resulting figure will be your ball speed, in theory anyhow. Therefore, if your swing speed is 116, multiply that by your smash factor (1.49), should be giving you a ball speed of 172.84mph, not 162mph. It could be that your swing speed is not as high as you were quoted, or that your smash factor is not as high as you were told (unlikely in my opinion, if your as consistent with your ball striking as you say). The other option is that your ball speed is actually higher than 162mph. All that I can say is that something is wrong with those numbers, they defy all ball flight laws of physics. That established, I fail to see how an accurate recommendation of shaft head combos can be given by this fitter. I know all this sounds a little negative, but I am afraid this kind of story is all too common. And although its a little negative in one way, in another way, it is quite positive, if new knowledge gained, can help in the future. As i said, contact your fitter, question these figures and see what he says, but also do your research on the internet, there is plenty of info on launch monitors and the figures they come up with, contact other fitters for launch monitor advice and do this until you find a fitter you can trust. I really wish you well. Jason.

There are a couple of contributing factors to

    SMASH FACTOR

1 will be range balls (EG 105 off can obviously will jump slower off the face than a premium ball) That's why TrackMan has just released a ball matrix feature on TMIII

(PS TrackMan doesn't need calibrating its just point and shoot it has motors in its legs that level itself and tips back 10 degrees and creates a dynamic stable environment - perfect for a radar of the highest quality to function - unlike other technologies - thats wat the club fitters, tour pro's etc pay for)

2 will be spin loft - the gap between - Attack angle and Dynamic Loft

If you would like more info on

    What creates  CLUB PATH

    What is Spin Loft?

    What is D- Plane?

Please email me or should we start a blog on here?

    Kindest regards

  8. Your ball speed/smash is off but regardless you sound very similar to me as I fight high launch and spin. I currently play a 910d3 RIP 80x and was Titleist Performance Institute fit on the trackman. Best options were in the following order 1. RIP 80 2. Real Ahina 80 3. Project X 8A4 4. Devotion 7 The best shaft I've hit in the 910 for dropping launch and spin = MOTORE SPEEDER VC7.2 Titleist didn't offer that shaft last summer when I got fit or I would have ordered it, but I WILL be ordering soon. BEATS my RIP on all counts and FEELS ridiculous. If you don't want to drop that kind of coin I'd go with the heavy RIP 70/80 or PX8A4

I have heard great things about the SPEEDER VC7.2.  I can not find that shaft to hit before purchasing, other then some regional fitting centers and of course the two Titleist locations.   I know the fact of the matter is I should try to get to Sleepy Hollow or Manchester Lane so "All" options are present but just no time for that in the near future. Perhaps getting the price on the Speeder and depending that number, giving it a try.  Exoctic shaft may be in the price range of the driver with stock shaft itself. :P

    Hi mate

Two things missing here are - your attack angle and dynamic loft -

I work for TrackMan in OZ -

My suggestion if you like the shaft you need at least a degree off that driver and that would be fixed

In terms of shafts the general rule of thumb is lighter = ball going higher

Although the PXI Project X's are getting good buzz

Try the C taper - irons or something as heavy buy high kick NOT low kick - Also consider your land angles - Trackman will tell you this - 6789PW coming in over 50 degrees (for holding the green - The  Driver around 39 degrees for bounce and roll)
