A little background. I've been playing golf for most of my life and hovered around the 10-handicap line for a while.  I've always had trouble getting that last stroke to drop to bring me into the single-digits.  I'm also a bit of a gear head and I love to tinker with different clubs and set-ups. I know this isn't best for my score or for my wallet but it's a hard habit to break.

In an effort to make 2010 the year I actually don't switch out my irons every other month (which I basically did last year) I decided to do something I've been wanting to do for a long time...get fit for a custom set.  I've always been a believer of fitting but for some reason I just never got fit. Outside of taking lessons, this was the best move I've made since I started golfing.

I ended up going to a local Titleist Advanced Fitter and it was a great experience.  We spent an hour tweaking set ups, comparing spin rates, adjusting lie angles and swapping out shafts until we found the right combination.  For a gear head, this alone was worth the price of admission. At the end of the session I was striking the ball better than ever before. Solid contact on the center swing after swing. So after 20+ years of golfing I finally found out that I need my irons 2* upright. I guess better late than never.

My new custom AP2 710 irons came in the other month and while the courses are still closed up here in the north I've been having the best range sessions ever. I went with the KB Tour shafts to complete the new set up and I can't say enough good things about these irons. Hopefully 2010 will be the year I breakthrough to the single digits.

So my final two cents...find a good fitter and get yourself set up with the right clubs. If you're in the Boston-area I highly recommend Mike Gibson at Harmon Golf. He rocks and he will get you set up.

+1 on Mike Gibson at the Harmon Club. I recently had a fitting with him and it was probably the best experience I've ever had. He really know his stuff. I went with the AP2s as well...

Reading your post has made me realize that I might also benefit from visiting a Titleist Advanced Fitter. Congrats on the new irons and good luck this summer.

Did they fit you for woods too?  I'm also a gear head, and I can't seem to find a driver I'm 100% comfortable with.

It's up to you. They fit me for my entire bag, but you can only do woods if you want. They have everything onsite regardless...

Thanks Tyler - I really can't say enough good things about getting fit. Each range session with the new sticks keeps getting better. I seriously look back and laugh because I live and breathe golf, spend way too much money on gear (just ask my wife) but always put off getting fit for some reason. Best move ever...that and switching to AP2's :)

As for my driver,  that is the next step. The Titleist fitting cart is amazing and you will definitely be able to get the right set up. It was really cool to see how switching shafts in my irons really impacted spin rates, so I can't wait to get down for a driver fitting. I would recommend going to a fitter that has Flight Scope or some other launch monitor to really make sure you get dialed in.

  7. I live in the Boston area, currently playing old DCI irons and in the market for new sticks. Definitely going to check out Mike over at Harmon. Good to know they are solid!

I too play the 990 dci with x100 shafts.  I went the custom fitting route and I still shoot in the 80's due to time to get on the course.  I will say that you should be fitted every few years as you age.  I've learnt that after 11 years my swing has changed allot.  For the good I hope.

Anyone every played with a mixed set?  3-6 cb or mb and 7-P forged?  I don't know if I've got the ball striking skills with my long irons to justify a forged set 3-P.

First, I definately agree....Mike Gibson is the best club fitter in the North East. I am a PGA member and a Titleist fitter and I went to him for my fitting!

I am about to put a mixed set in the bag. 4, 5, and 6 iron 710 CB and 7-W 710 MB.

Josh G -- I have a combo set.  3-4 cb's and 5-pw mb's w/ x100's.  I was fit for the set by RC in Austin.  He's the best and really took a lot of time to understand what I wanted out of a set of irons.  we hit a lot of different kinds of shots to get the set up just right.

If people don't get fit for their clubs they are silly.  Its the most beneficial thing you can do any most people will include it with a new set of clubs.  I had a golfer last week that was complaining that he hit his driver and 3-wood the same distance.  We put him on a launch monitor and saw his launch angle was too low with the driver.  We gave him more loft and he gained 30 yards just like that.

    Josh G,

I've played mixed sets for the last few years.  I mix the AP1 and AP2s and couldn't be happier.  Titleist is great to work with when you want to order mixed sets

Got fitted for my AP2's. On order now.

Next step is my driver. I currently game a 905T with a Graffaloy Blue tipped.  Hit it very well, but have it in my head to try a new head and shaft.

  15. JOSH--HOW DID YOU DECIDED ON HE SPLIT BETWEEN THE AP 1 AND AP 2?

    Thanks
