Adjusting Swing Weight

  1. After a Titleist fitting, I special ordered a set of T100 irons (4 - PW) with KBS C-taper 120 S shafts and specified a swing weight of D3. Titleist did a great job; all the clubs are D3. Unfortunately, I think the fitter and I overestimated my strength, and I'm struggling to generate my normal speed and distances. I'd like to reduce the swingweight to D2. Is it possible to do while keeping the same shafts? How did Titleist set all the clubs to D3 in the first place? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Love the clubs. Thank you.

  2. Titleist has different weighted heads separated by weight to match the desired swingweight, approximately every 2 grams. You can lighten the swingweight either by cutting the length or counterbalancing the club. Counterbalancing will increase the total weight, but lighten the swingweight. Extra wraps of tape/heavier grips or weight plugs will do the trick, however a D3 is not exactly "heavy" and getting it to D2 will be only noticable psychology. I say play with them a bit more before altering anything. If you tempo is on the slower/smoother side even with a lot of clubhead speed you are might like the heavier swingweight.
  3. Hi Dave,

Wow, I'm impressed and surprised that Titleist goes through the trouble of making heads of different weights. In general, I struggle to slow down my tempo and transition, which may be why I struggle a little with these clubs. I tried my friend's clubs the other day - he has C-Taper 130 shafts in his irons - and was surprised that his clubs seemed so much easier to swing despite having heavier shafts. I can only assume that the difference is the swing weight; his are probably around D0.

When I swing with a smoother tempo (more often these days), I get the expected results. One of the reasons I ordered the clubs with D3 was to help slow down my tempo. It's working.

I'll take your advice and keep working with these clubs a little more. It's my 4i that gives me the most trouble, and if it continues to do so, maybe I'll just alter that one a bit. Thank you for the information and advice.

  5. Counterbalancing would be your best option. Very little weight should be needed to drop the swingweight 1 pt. If you can find a grip that weighs an extra 5grams, you'll do the job. I agree with Dave M., the difference in 1sw is going to be mostly psychological. Just to give you a better idea, if you set a dollar bill on the club head, you'll change the swingweight by 1pt. Good Luck!
  6. Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I don't think it'll take much adjustment to get the T100's dialed in. I like the idea of counterbalancing because it's an easy fix that won't require me to exchange the clubs. Thanks again.

Interesting discussion as I'm concerned with the other end of the argument as I'm fitting heavier grips which changes the swing weight making the head seem lighter and so losing the feel of clubhead position.

Originally I was fitted for irons by an independent fitter who knew and ordered my clubs with midsize grips but not sure if he asked or if Titleist adjusted the swing weight back to D1. When the clubs first arrived I had real issues and the fitter even adjusted lie a little flatter to help.

All my other fittings have been by Titleist and in the UK they don't carry midsize grips on fitting carts so all my wedges, driver, fairways and hybrid have been fitted with standard grips and delivered with midsize, so far no real issues but obviously swing weight would have changed.

As we all swing different maybe some of us feel the clubhead at different stages in our swing and that's why we have differing issues.

Currently I have Golf Pride Midsize MMc+4's in wedges and woods and Lamkin REL GEN3 in irons and will be changing all these to Tour Velvet +4. As the guys at TXG say 4g = 1 swing weight the TV+4 are going to be a bit of a difference from the Lamkin so I was thinking of adding a little lead tape to my irons just to see if it makes a difference.
