I've been playing golf for 56 years. In all that time, I've been a voracious reader about anything related to the game. Until now, I have never heard about shortening a driver to increase distance and accuracy, though the accuracy part probably makes sense.

How do you folks feel about this concept? Has anyone tried it?

Just because I have some spare clubs around, I'm tempted to cut an inch off one of the drivers and one of the 3 woods to see whether it really makes any difference to me. I have some lead tape to work on the swing weight if need be and I'm not going to touch my favorite driver or 3 wood for the moment.

    Your thoughts???

    Thanks,

    Dennis

    Dennis:

Some players can achieve better ball speeds with shorter clubs due to better contact with the center of the clubface.  Many times, especially with the fairway woods, players don't find the sweet spot.  Usually the shorter the club, the more of a downward angle is produced coming into the golf ball.  Some level of a downward angle is needed to better find the sweetspot on a fairway wood.

If you are looking to test this, I would suggest starting with 1/2" shorter.  Try simply choking down a little or if you have extra clubs laying around cutting it down is fine.  Make sure you re-swingweight so that you are getting a true test.

Trial is best done with an expert.  Find a local Titleist fitter and test different lengths on a launch monitor.

Because of the shorter shaft, you will tend to be more accurate. Because you are more accurate you will have more confidence. Because you have more confidence you will tend to swing more aggressively. Thus you get more distance.

If you already hit your driver well, going to a shorter shaft won't do you any good.
