I am a +2 handicap, former golf pro. I am now 53 and I have AM status again. I’ve lost a significant amount of distance with my irons. What’s best way to increase my swing speed with equipment changes? I’ve recently ordered T100s irons to replace my new CB heads. Would a lighter shaft help me increase swing speed? I know my ball speed will increase a few mph with new T100s heads.

I would recommend talking to a teaching professional as well as a certified Titleist fitter. The fitters are very good at matching the correct heads and shafts. Most members of TT go this route when purchasing Titleist equipment. With respect, just a couple of thoughts. =)

Increased measurable swing speed is typically gained through swing changes or drills. You can go to a lighter shaft, but the speed gained will likely be insignificant, and often comes with other issues such as more spin, higher flight, loss of feel... so may not be the best path for everyone.

I'd make sure the shaft flex and ball you are playing are appropriate for your speed, and if you feel like you absolutely need more distance, then working on speed drills and increasing lag / shaft lean is the path to distance. You will certainly gain a couple MPH of ball speed with a slightly more forgiving / stronger lofted club head, but there are limitations to what equipment alone can achieve when it comes to significant gains.

How often do you go to the gym to work on your core? Clubs (shafts) can only take you so far.

I lost significant distance after turning 50 and committed to losing weight during the pandemic. I lost 35 lbs and regained my distance, swing, and ball speed. After getting fit with new Titleist clubs, I put the T200 22° Utility Build and T200 5 iron into play this season and eliminated the 4 and 5 hybrids. Returning to the gym to work on lower body and core strength conditioning will benefit you more than working on new clubs or swings. You already have a good game!

I had a similar problem with the loss of distance after injury, but a visit to the local pro shop and a session on Trackman help identify the problem which was a small set up change and now I am back to my best
  7. I’m 51 and was averaging 105 ss with driver before winter. Been using rypstick for 6 months averaging 116 ss now. I also lift weights 1 or 2 times a week full body..nothing crazy at my age..
