I know it is the best choice to go get fitted with a trained person on a launch monitor to see what club and shaft combos work best for you. I am a long, high-ball hitter who has no issues with launch or simply getting the ball up in the air. I am actually looking for a shaft/club combo that will give me a lower launch with a more penetrating/boring trajectory, which I no doubt believe I will be getting the D3 model. My real dilemma is the shaft issue. I know with the D3, the standards are 'ahina, kai'li, rip and project x. I feel the ahina will work best for my desired trajectory, but there are tons of other shafts to go with. I picked up a Titlest 2011 Club brochure in my local golf shop, and the driver and fairway shaft options toward the back of the booklet involve over 80 shafts with different specs.........NV, Motore, Rombax, Fubuki and on and on.  Will the golf shop fitting me have all these options?  Are these shafts more expensive than the 4 standard ones I listed in the beginning? Sorry for the windy message, but it seems the fitting could take forever with these options! Also, I would like to try an 8.5 but you hardly ever see these on the shop floors. I'm assuming most larger shops carry the 8.5 head, possibly in their backroom stock or something? Your input is appreciated. Best of luck with your 2011 season guys...........and ladies.

    Hi Corey,

Just went through a fitting and the pro was great (Joe and Leighs at Pine Oaks) they were able to take the 9.5 and adjust up or down on loft. For you they can make it a 8.75 to test with different shafts, I went with the 9.5 adjusted to 10.25 with a RIP 60 stiff. Also on Titleist web site you can read up on all the shafts (flex point, launch and spin) and compare it to a custom you might like or ask if they will bring one in.Locally Titleist reps are always around and they carry alot more and should know the upcharge.

Cory, I just picked up my D3  8.5 with the ProjX 73g stiff tip and I love it. I'm a 48 year old 6' 2"  with a USGA 6.6 index with a  106-109 clubhead speed... It took a few trys to get the correct launch angle and flight. I finally settled on the C1 setting and love it. Ask for a fitting, take the hour or so and hit everything you think might work, it will be worth it...

    Hi Corey,

I hit the ball similar to you and just bought a 8.5 D3 with an upgraded RIP 70 shaft at no extra cost. The launch monitor was showing all the right numbers with my swing speed between 105-109mph.

I got the 8.5 with the RIP 70 to lower my spin rate and get a flatter trajectory. This combo works for me :)

The aldila RIP is the only shaft that felt unmatched, solid and responsive with my swing speed.I put the 70 x flex in my drivers(TITLEIST D3&D2 8.5*)These shafts are awesome- shot dispersion is better yes better than the Diamana whiteboard.I actually pulled the whiteboard from my other drivers and installed the RIP.I am sold, extremely long, shot dispersion is incredible, feel is great and the look kicks ass(BONUS!!!) Try one you won"t be disappointed.

I just got fitted with Titleist Canada rep Gavin and fitter Blake. It was awesome, they knew exactly what I needed (I guess it helped that I played a round with them two days before). First, a little bit about my game. I'm 18, 0.4 RCGA index, with driver speed of around 108-112 mph, mid flight and spin. I'm a solid ballstriker, and average about 14-15 GIR per round. Blake got me in a 910D3 9.5* with a UST Mamiya Proforce V2 76g stiff. Standard A-1 SFT setting, as I already hit it really straight. The shaft/head combo was great, the dispersion was minimal (15 yards left to right), and the flight was low and penetrating, just the way I like it. I would recommend getting fit, it's hard to try and fit yourself. I thought I knew a lot about my specs, and before the fitting I thought I would be a 910D3 9.5* w/ Aldila RIP 60 x-flex. I was close, but not close enough.

Fitters may not have every single option for shafts. I think a normal fitter would not have exotic shafts like the Fujikura Rombax 7Z08 (for example). You would probably need to go to an Titleist Advanced Fitter to get access to more shafts. But they'll likely have a shaft that fits you. Especially with the SFT technology, dialing in a perfect fit is pretty easy. Look here for potential upcharges: http://www.titleist.com/golf-clubs/shafts/default.aspx?tab=1

I think all non-stock shafts come with an upcharge, which can range from $40 to $250 (or more). I think the upcharge for the Proforce V2 is about $40, I've yet to get my order from Titleist.

Fittings don't take long, maybe 45 minutes at the absolute most for a driver. Once you've hit a couple shots, the fitter can narrow it down to a couple potential shafts that could fit you. You don't have to try every shaft!

My fitter advised against a 8.5* for me, as the 9.5* is more versatile. I can go to 8.75* or 11* if I need it. I wouldn't need a 7.5* driver. But if that's what you need, then get it. Get fit, and you'll know what you need.
