Danny the reason people say you need more bounce in NY than in Florida is because the ground, in general, is softer in NY than in Florida. Thus the club will dig more once it hits the ground.

Basically bounce is for correction of mistakes, with exception to sand and specialty shots, and these mistakes are hitting the ground before the ball.

So if you have a steep angle of attack, yes, more bounce is appropriate for softer gound.

If you have a shallow angle of attack more bounce will be a problem, what you would look for is a wider sole.

For sand play it depends on what kind of shot you play normally and the sand conditions, you could have hard packed sand or fluff anywhere in the country.

Danny, I am from Virginia so the soil is a bit different, but this week it has rained everyday and if your ground is softer than this all the time, I don't know how your maintenance crew keep it from being mud. But here at my home course it is usually soft in the spring and hard it the fall, so I like my wedges to perform in all of the above, since I can't afford 2 or 3 sets. I have a 54° with 11 bounce, which I love for most all lies, especially out of the sand and rough, but with only a little extra concentration will pick the ball from a tight lie. I also have a 60° with 4 bounce which I use for those tricky shots that nothing else will get to. It does good out of sand when you open her up. I love my wedge setup and would recommend it to anyone. If you are confident with your swing and like to be "inventive" around the green, I would personally not go crazy with a ton of bounce.

I am a Northeast player in New York and I use Vokey TVD M Grind wedges, 54 and 58 - I have no idea whatsoever what the bounce is on these clubs but they are absolutely brilliant.  Vokey states that this model is good for a digger or a slider so I guess their versatility will enable a player to use them in various conditions.

I'd like to add that growing up playing golf, we never knew what bounce we had on our wedges, at least I and the people I played with didn't know - we just found a wedge that looked good to the eye and flighted the ball the way we wanted and that was your baby - now, everyone is fine tuning to the max, which is fine, but my advice would be to find some wedges that make you look at them and say, "damn, that's a nice looking club, I can knock it close with that" - and then go practice.
