I have been playing my D3 for about three months now and I love it.  When I was fitted, the Kai'li 65g stiff was told to be my best shaft option.  There is no doubt that when I line everything up perfectly, I get a heck of a drive out of this combo.  I have a problem though, and that is consistency.  I do not have just one miss.  I have a tendency to spray my drives left or right.  This never happened with previous drivers and it does not happen with other woods.  Comparing my driver to other woods or other drivers, I have noticed that I cannot 'feel' the clubhead as much throughout my swing and when being watched have been told that my swing does not look as natural as it does with other clubs (including other drivers)

Looking at the custom options chart here on Titleist's website, I see that the Kai'li has a relatively high torque rating.  Could this be the cause of my directional misses?

For reference, when hitting a friend's Wilson Staff Fybrid 5wood with Proforce V2 stiff shaft (63grams...which is very close to the weight of my driver shaft), I have a nice straight ballflight...and long too!  Really the ballflight of the V2 vs Kai'li do not correlate to the custom option chart on the Titleist site and this confuses me more about what shaft is best for me.

I am interested in trying the Proforce in a D3, but was told that it would play far too stiff because of the SureFit hosel...and this does not make any sense to me.  The problem is, I do not have a way to try other shafts in my driver.  I went to a demo day and I am sorry to say that the Titleist rep was unfriendly and uninformative.  He was too busy chit-chatting about personal things to help with any real information.  I could drive to another town ask them to let me hit on the launch monitor, but they tend to only want to help when you are buying a club that day.

So really, I have few questions:

1 - Will a different weight shaft help me to feel the clubhead better?

2 - Would a lower torque shaft help with directional consistency?

3 - Does the SureFit hosel cause a shaft to play stiffer than normal?

4 - Would a weight kit be a better option to improve my ability to feel the clubhead?

Thanks for the help.  I have read too much information and have managed to get myself thoroughly confused on this topic.

Well I don't know anything about the surefit tip making shafts stiffer...back in the 905 days, the bore thru did make shafts stiffer.  But in any event, I definitely believe you are primarily dealing with a torque issue.  Hopefully you have a chance to test some different shafts and I would recommend the F3 Motore, then Titleist Ahina 72, then the Aldila RIP and see which one works the best!  The order above decreases the torque slightly with the RIP being the lowest.

Focus on torque and lets see what happens!

  3. Dear Josh, When I'm looking for a new shaft to buy I keep in mind three things: 1) Stiffer shafts work better with faster swings. 2) Less torque gives you more control (personally I like a torque of 3.1 +/- 0.2). 3) More shaft weight provides more weight feedback (but be careful not to lose the proper weight balance between shaft and clubhead; i.e: an 80 to 90 grams shaft might be to much weight for a driver clubhead , but just the right weight for the lighter clubhead of a fairway wood). Hope these three rules help you resolve some of your doubts.
  4. I have been exceptionally happy with my 910 D2 driver. I special ordered it with RIP 70R (no extra cost) and loved it. I have club head speed with D2 of 90-95 mph and get occasionally 250-260 yds. I like the dispersion. RIP 60 shafts are a bit flighty to me. I think that you might have a similar game. I have Proforce V2 76g in my 3-Wood at between S and R, and love it.

Directionally, I find that D2 is much more forgiving (straighter) than D3. Recently, I bought a Motore F3 70S and fitted with after-market Sure-Fit adaptor. This worked out perfectly. I added ~10-20 yards. Similar dispersion. I see two fixes for your spraying. Easy try is to increase the loft on your Sure-Fit set up. If that makes your ball flight too high and roll too short, you need a new shaft. I recommend Motore F3. Try 70 gram S-flex. It has a silky feel but comes with very low torque and mid-flex. Good roll off the tee shots, and this, you can adjust by adjusting the loft on your Sure-Fit. Use the Sure-Fit work for you. If you do that the swing weight will increase couple points, but that might be what you need.

That's why I paid ~$100 more for 910 models over other drivers that have glue-in shafts.

    Josh,

You raise lots of points here so here we go:
    1)  In order of influence on ball flight, your golf swing will be the biggest issue. You don't mention your handicap, but I would look at that first before the shaft.  If you are a 6 handicap or higher there is a great chance your swing is the issue.  And I'm not sure what it means " your swing does not look as natural..."  First and foremost I would find a good teaching professional that also is a really good fitter to review your situation.  The fact that someone fitted( assuming they are a competent fitter) you into a D3 head tells me you are high spin. If that spin comes from out-to-in swing and a resulting slice.... then your swing is the issue, not the shaft. Do not spend $$$ on the shaft or chase exotic shafts if slice spin is in the mix.

    2) Anytime a player mentions the word feel --   he is the only one that knows if that is good or bad.  Feel is not something we can address as fitters. Anything that has a significant affect on ball flight, we can tell you what will be best.

    3) weight kit - a few swing weight points ---- no affect on ball flight.  Maybe a feel issue....
