hello all...this June will mark the 5 year anniversary since I started this addiction we know as the game of Golf.  I decided to take the plunge and get some lessons and after several I have learned and corrected a lot about my swing.  The pro I take lessons with suggested I pick a ball that correlates with my swing speed and stick to it. I dont have a tour players swing speed but I do swing quick enough to have been fitted with stiff shaft AP1's...either way all I have even done is purchased whatever was on sale as far as golf balls come.  I have always tried to stick the softer stuff (B330, Pro V1, Z star, Penta) but never really stuck to anything. I guess my question is how important is sticking to one model of ball (lower scores, distance, accuracy)? Thanks for your help!!

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for the post and great question... Finding the right golf ball for your game and then playing that model consistently is extremely important. The golf ball is the only piece of equipment you use on every shot. By playing the same model, on every shot, on every hole, during every round, it places you on the path to a more consistent game and ultimately lower scores.

And if you think about it, changing your golf ball changes every shot in your bag.

On the golf ball fitting front, there are a number of variables to consider when looking for the best golf ball for your game, but fitting a golf ball based solely on swing speed is a myth.

When you're out on a golf course you are playing a wide variety of golf shots during the round. Since a golf ball only reacts to the force being applied, different shots require different swing speeds in order to execute them properly.

Keeping this in mind, a golf ball must perform for all golfers of all swing speeds on all shots, otherwise it won't perform for any golfer.

    I hope this helps!

    Thanks,

    Mike

Well said Mike...I will keep this in mind next time I am standing in the ball section looking to refill my golf bag. I will ask you this Mike.  I want a soft ball with low compression and less driver spin....Pro v1x?

    Thanks!!!

    Hi Alex,

I would definitely give the Pro V1x and Pro V1 a try. I wouldn't worry so much about compression ratings and instead focus on the performance you are seeing when testing the different models.

What I've done in the past for an on-course evaluation is to play the front nine with the Pro V1 and then the back nine with the Pro V1x. I tracked the performance of the balls on all shots and at the end of the round, reviewed the results to help determine the model that performed best for my game.

You can also check out our golf ball fitting brochure here: http://media.titleist.com/images/titleist/files/US/balls/2015-golf-ball-fitting-app/2015FittingBrochure.pdf

It is a great resource that is full of really helpful information.

Good suggestion to play the front nine with one ball and the back nine with the other. I would add however that perhaps it would be best to stretch it to two rounds. On the second day play the ProV1X on the front nine and the ProV1 on the back nine.

Two reasons,,,  It gives you a chance to compare the results from the two balls on the same nine. Also - if you are like me, you tend to get a little more tired on the back nine and your drives are not hit quite as well and your irons are a little more off target. I do find I hit more greens in regulation on my front nines than I do on the back nine so there is more demand on my short game on the back nines.

    Just a thought...

The golf swing and golf course playing strategy are all about eliminating variables. That being said, sticking with the same model ball gives you confidence in how the ball will fly, how much it will spin, how far it will go, and the value added from this confidence can have a positive impact on your scores.

Great posts Mike! I appreciate all the information you're passing along here. I never really thought much about how changing golf balls frequently could affect my score, but it makes perfect sense after hearing you say it. Looks like I'll be forking over a bit more $ to play the ProV1x on a regular basis - may have to just start buying a sleeve or two at a time...

Bought a box of the 2014 ProV1's on sale yesterday after work - decided that may be a better fit for me on the course I play most because the greens just don't receive the ball well. From here on, I'll try to buy a sleeve or two every so often and a full box when I can afford it. Thanks again for shining some light on this issue Mike.

I'm a ProV1 player but during the beginning and end of the season I use NXT tour balls.  I use these balls because I've scored well with them and this gives me confidence to use these balls.  I would try out the different brands of Titleist balls and other types that you might even find as your playing and the ones you score the best with, use.  It's nice getting into a grove with a ball you feel good with and have faith in.  Have fun and hit them well!!!!!!

Hi Alex - Started about 5 years ago as well. With a driver head speed under 90, I may be further away from tour speed than you. I started with whatever was 15 balls for $10.99 and "found". Before eliminating over the top slices, I moved to balls to minimize side spin, like the old NXT (now Velocity?). At that time "found" Pro Vs quickly went into the "lost" column. Without the banana dispersion pattern anymore, I've tried a lot of balls marketed "for me". None have proven to be as long or work as well around the green for me as the 1x. Contrary to the old belief that V1 was for swing speeds over 95 and V1x was for over 104. The only difference for me is the V1x flight is a tad longer than the V1 off of driver. I also take advantage of the (just ended) 4 for 3 Loyalty program. Makes the best less than the rest.

Hi Don....like you I agree on the V1X. I am seeing about 12-15 yards more distance off the tee also. I played the NXT Tour S for awhile and enjoyed them very much but the feel you get from the Pro V line ,in my opinion, is the best I have tried so far. Its crazy how we as golfers are willing to spend several hundred dollars every year or so to get that "new" updated driver but aren't willing to spend an extra $20-$25 every couple of months (during golf season) to get the ball that gives us the most confidence in the first place. I hadn't heard about the 4 for 3 program until now...next time I will have to take advantage of that I think. The honest truth is that I do switch between the V1X and another ball. But I may have to just reconsider that approach and stick to one ball permanently.

Alex, the only thing I might add to what Mike D. said is to reverse the next round, I don't know about you but quite often my front nine is a lot different than my back nine.

    London,

Great question about sticking to one manufacturer\model of ball.

I had this quandry 2 years back.  I was essentially playing any ball I would find.

After a not so frequent lesson and changing clubs, my PGA pro recommended I stick to one ball.

He gave me some of his older Pro V1x and Pro V1s which were still very good.

I still play with 1-3 year old model balls but find that they are soo much more consistent.

Yesterday was a point of fact where I found another make of ball and said why not play it... Wow what a difference in such that I did not play as well as I did not have the control I was used to.

For me I will stick to the one model and make and guess what, I do lose very few balls now!
