  1. I found this on the course on Thursday and wasn’t sure what it was. Thought it might be a prototype from past years or something? The dimples are a little smaller than current proVs

    Lol, Balata balls were the players balls 25 30 years ago. They are wound core balls with an extremely soft cover. You could spin them back 30 yards on the green with a wedge. They also didn’t go very far or last more than a couple of holes. 100 was the compression rating, balls were mostly 90 or 100 compression back then.

    I was a balata guy until they quit producing them. If you like a soft ball that was the ball. The bad news was they cut like a knife into a piece of cake. It was not a distance ball compared to today's standard. They may need to bring them back with a stronger cover the way the game is going on the Pro Tour.

    I remember the balata ball. JAM was right...if you hit that ball thin you could guarantee it would be cut. I remember it back in the late 60's early 70's. Perhaps someone a representative from Titleist could provide a little history on this ball. It looks like it is in surprisingly great shape.
