I carry a 910H 19*/3H and a 910F 19*/5W and see very little distance difference between them. I hit them both with about the same consistency, usually pretty good. I also have, but have not been playing lately, a 909F 3W. When I hit that well, I can easily get 20 more yards than my 910F 5W, but I don't hit it as consistently from the fairway. So if I can't count on it, what's the point in having it in my bag? I don't really like carrying two clubs that give me similar distances (19H and 19F). Shouldn't the 19* fairway be longer than the same lofted hybrid? I have actually adjusted the 910F to 18.25, but still don't seem to get more distance than the 910H 19*. I am considering switching to a 910F 17* 4W, but how much additional yardage should I expect over the 19H off tight lies, and is the 910F 17*/4W much easier to hit from the fairway than my old 909 3W?

I realize that club distances are based on swing speed, ability, etc., so I'm not really looking for anyone to tell me how far I should hit these various clubs, but more what to expect as far as distance differences. My driver SS is only 95. I play reg flex shafts. 56 years old. 9-11 hdcp. I typically hit both my 19H and 19F roughly 190-200 on sweet spot contact swings. My 909F 3W can measure anywhere from 195-225, depending on how well I connect. Unfortunately, from tight lies, I don't connect well enough, often enough. I'd like to have a club in my bag that is as easy (or nearly as easy) to hit as my 910F 19* 5W, but one that gives me at least 10-15 yards more distance.

    Any thoughts?

I'd go with the club you hit more consistently.

I had a similar situation, a 3 wood I just topped probably half the time. I tried a 17* hybrid and while I lost 10 yards of distance, I hit the hybrid MUCH more consistently and didn't find anywhere on the course where I suffered for a lack of that 10 yards.

The down side? People notice... When you walk up with a driver and no 3 wood, people notice the one long club sticking up and jump down to the hybrid and irons. At the worst, you have to explain yourself a bit.

I chucked the 3 wood a long time ago.  My problem with a 3 wood is that I balloon it a bit and hit a fade or slice AND 43" is just too long for a fairway wood.   I could hit a persimmon 3W rather easily because the shaft length was only 42".

A 17* fairway wood will give you the distance needed and there is maybe 5-7 yards difference vs the 3W and a lot easier to launch off the fairway.

I actually hit a 21* 7 wood 10 yards farther than a 19H and the same distance as a 17H.   There is about 7-10 yards diff between a 18* 5W and the 21* 7W.  There is little difference between shaft lengths and lie angles between a 7W and a 17H and the former is much easier to launch.  I actually hit a 5 wood just as far as a 3W.  I also can crush a 7 wood because it has been my fave since 2006.

    I carried a 975F 16.5 and 20.5 between 2007-2010.

  4. Golf digest did a "test" about this same issue a while ago. If your swing speed was somewhat fast you would get the same distance I think it was 207 for the wood and 205 with the hybrid. According to their test the bog difference occured with a slower swing speed. I would try a 4 wood should give you good distance and be a little easier to hit then a 3 wood.

Back in the "good ole days", a 4W was 18* or so and I used to use one on the par 4s because I could always put it down the center and still hit 450 yd holes in 2.  Even early 2010, in the quest for for upgrading fww performance, I carried a Warbird 4W and used it on the shorter par 4s.   My two cents in long club play is to go with driver-4W-7W-4H (and some pros recommend this for the average golfing population).   My dad has been a fan of driver-4-7 woods for quite some time now.

My favorite fairway wood has been 20 or 21* and I can hit it off any lie and get appreciable distance.   I just seem to have the ability to crush a 41 1/2" wood with a 58 deg lie angle.  I can get on it and hit it 200 or swing conservatively for 180.
