SO I need help finishing out my set. Here is what I have with distances right now:

    • Razr Fit Driver (tour ad di-6x shaft): 300
    • Titleist 17 degree hybrid: 22-245
    • Titleist 712 AP2's:
      • 4: 200
      • 5: 190
      • 6: 180
      • 7: 170
      • 8: 160
      • 9: 145
      • PW: 130
    • rac TP wedges:
      • 54(bent to 52): 125
      • 56: 105
      • 58(bent to 59.5): 80
    • Putter: Older bettinardi

Any suggestions? I'd like to bridge the gap between the hybrid and driver, and possibly replace the hybrid and wedges with new titleist's.

    Thanks for your input!!

I would suggest getting a titleist 910F 15* degree. As for the hybrid and wedges definitely switch them out for titleists.

Given that the AP2 PW = 45*, you may want to try 50-08 bent to 51, 54-11 bent to 55 and a 60. I use a 58-04 and 62-07 SM3 for the lob and X wedge. These work for me, though. I tried a RAC TP gap wedge 5 years ago (got it at the PX on clearance) - didn't like it at all.

We don't know the loft on the driver, I'll assume it is no more loft than 9 degrees.  You have a little bit of distance gap from the 4I to the 17H, as well as the gap from hybrid to driver.  Getting fit will help you gap from the H to the D.  We also don't know if the hybrid is an adjustable 910 or a fixed 909 or earlier.  The fairway may end up being a 15 or 13.5.  Are you comfortable with the wedges and adjusting to cover the distances?  The 54/56 wedges look pretty close, Lou had suggestions for that.

If you go for a fitting, might be fun to know if the Razr-fit challenge holds up in reverse, if it still beats a D2/D3.  ;-)

My main reason for bending the 50 and the 54 are that I have pretty much established a bit of a comfort zone with a 51-09 and 55-12. The SM3 54-11 is a very versatile wedge and had a rather narrow sole so it works equally well on tight and soft lies. The 62-07 is also a very versatile wedge and I conquered the Bunker From Hell with it. I've become a bit of a wizard with the 50,54 and 62. The 58-04 has its shots but kind of leaning toward taking it out and working more high shots with the 54. Quite frankly, a 13.5 is very difficult to hit off the grass and the 15 is something most people don't hit well off the fairway (also, the ball has to be sitting rather pretty to hit it); furthermore, the difference in distance between a 13.5 and 15 is just about nil. You also have the option of setting the 15 to 16*. Can also set the 17H to 18* to close the gap. Here's something for other TT members to think about.... have you ever thought about using a 17 and 21 fairway wood? This gives a wood in between the 3 and 5 wood and the 21 is a good replacement for a 3 iron or 3H. A 4 wood is much easier to hit off the deck and the difference between it and the 3W (15) is maybe 5-7 yards and 10 yards to the strong 3 (13.5); matter of fact, one might find better distance with the 4 wood. I've been an avid user of a 7 wood for close to 6 years now. They can be hit on most lies. There is little difference in length and lie angle between a 7 wood and 2 iron hybrid. I actually hit a 7 wood just as far as a 2H. There are some pros that use 7 woods (Stuart Appleby mentioned it on Golf Channel one time). Even Player fesses up to a 9 wood these days. Best thing to do is try all these options at the fitter. I would try out the 13.5, 15 and 17 fairway woods alongside each other. Also would try a 19 and 21 fairway wood and 19 hybrid alongside the the 17H. This is just me.
