    Hello,

I recently purchased a new set of irons and got them fitted 1,5° upright.

But after 2 rounds of golf I still can't hit them properly... Many shanks, slices and even good shots are 20 metres (22 yards) shorter then usual.
I played TM MBs before with the same shaft (ProjectX 6.0) therefore I don't get what's wrong.
I was wondering if you might know what the problem is.

BTW : The TM set had a standard lie

    Thanks in advance,
    Marc

TM standard lie angles are the same as Titleist. What I did when I went in for a fitting was take an old club that I knew I hit dead straight and compared the lie tape vs the club being fit. Sure enough, the lie tape had me hitting 1 tick mark toward the toe. The cause of your shank and slice is that you are standing too close to the ball and too upright with little knee flex (arms tucked in too much). Try standing further from the ball with a little more knee flex (the toe of your irons should point up slightly).

Usually too upright of a club causes a pull or hook and too flat causes a push or slice with a normal stance. If you compensate for the upright lie by standing too erect it causes a slice; likewise, compensating for a flat club by a lower stance further from the ball causes a hook. Personal experience also. Before I got my AP1 irons I played with a set of Eye 2 irons that started out with "green dot" lie (2.25 upright) and I had them gradually bent down to "blue dot" lie (.75 upright; same as Titleist standard lie). I choked halfway down the handle on when they were "green dot" and hit the 8-PW pretty well but couldn't hit the 6 or 7 iron (and actually lost distance). Phase 2 was to have them reshafted from the mixed to TT Lite XL and bent down to "yellow dot" (my static fit) and they played OK but I still had to choke down a little bit to hit them cleanly and I got an occasional pull or snap hook. Turns out dynamic fit was "blue dot" (also at that time I was alternating with a set of DCI 981 irons that I had set at standard lie). My AP1s are 2008 models (I had to buy the 8 iron off ebay but found the 7,9,PW at the iron bin at Golf Mart and I had the fitter bend them to standard lie - lie tape dead center and shots dead straight; all had R300 shafts, which I have been using for ages). I gained one club by switching from the Eye 2 mainly because the PW loft on the AP1 is the same as the 9 iron on the Eye 2 and the AP1 7 iron is 1* weaker than the Eye 2 6 iron; the AP1s are also a lot easier to hit.

Thank you very much for your quick responses.
So if I get you well you mean that it's just a matter of getting used to the lie that I am not common with.

    Thanks anyway :)

Basically.  You get used to playing ill fitting clubs and then you initially don't hit properly fitted clubs.   Clubs that are too upright are generally easier to compensate by choking down.  Flat clubs, on the other hand, are a lot harder to hit and shots are more erratic (it is also easier to lose your balance with a flat club and that is the main cause of shankitis in that case).

I played with standard lie irons between 1972-2006 (not a lot of golf between 1993-2006 - almost none).  Although I was hitting irons dead straight when I started back up again in 2006, I was hooking graphite shafted woods . I also had a height change in 2005 (somehow gained an inch to 6'1" at age 48).  I got a tip in 2008 about standing more upright and that worked with the woods but began hitting erratic iron shots (I had to have my irons adjusted upright).

I have all my lie angles and shaft lengths charted in MS Excel.  I know a 35" club (LW) will have a 65* lie angle, a 36" club (9 iron) will have a 64* lie angle, and a  37" club (7 iron) will have a 63* lie angle.
