    Hello Fellow Team Titleist Members! Hope all had a very special Holiday!

    Recently, I have been, yet again, contemplating what clubs stay in the bag and which to play. All Titleist of course!

    I have been fit for the entire 915 Line, which are amazing but I haven't switch over since I do not have access to take the clubs for on course trial due to winter! However recently, I am kind of falling out of love with my 909 Hybrid 19 degree with UST Axivcore Black. The swing is in good form and hitting the ball well. I feel as though the ball flight is high and not piercing.  I have a Tour Issue 906F2 that is a 15 degree bent to 17 degrees and cut 1 inch short with an Aldila R&D Proto 85-S, of which I was going to take out of play. I'm hitting this club solid and long.

    Just wanted to get a feel from all on how you feel about Hybrid vs. 5 Wood.  Thanks for your input!

    Thanks for the post.

    When it comes to choosing a Hybrid or FW, I often suggest that the player looks at their ball flight with each club and how they plan on using them. Individuals who need help increasing height through launch and spin often benefit from the FWY woods lower CG. Hybrids are often better for individuals looking for a more penetrating ball flight compared to woods of comparable loft.

    Also, make sure you determine the distance you want to hit the club. It does not matter how well you hit a certain club if it does not fill the  proper gaps.

    Finally, I have typically found that individuals with lower ball speeds benefit from FWY woods.

    It is always best to see a local fitter, but hopefully this gives you some direction.

    Keep us up to date.

    I had the same dilemma a couple of seasons ago.  Ultimately I went with the hybrid.  My thinking, a 5-wood will roll more and a hybrid will spin (and hold the green) better.  I won't be using this from the tee very often, but it will be a club to attack the green from longer distances or attempting to get to a certain layup yardage.  So I didn't need the extra roll a 5-wood would give you.  I've been very happy with my decision.

  5. I think I may be an anomaly, but I can't hit hybrids for my life so I carry a 5 wood. I went to get fit twice and went through 3 different hybrids, but to no avail... it also covers my distance gaps and I don't really have issues landing them on greens.

    To Bubba's point, the best thing to do is to see a fitter... can't stress the importance. Cheers!

    I personally don't carry a 5-wood in my bag as I am pretty long hitter. I only have Driver, 3-wood then down to my 3-hybrid 19 degree which I hit about 230 yards so it acts very much like a 5 wood for me. I personally like to have 4 wedges because of my length, PW, 52, 56, and 60 degree. I also found that I hit the ball slightly better with a hybrid vs. the 5-wood. V/R Jason White

    CoolBreeze,

    Not that long ago I had a very similar post.  Can't find it now.  In any event, I did get a 5wood and it was the best decision I made.  I have issues getting the ball in the air, therefore it fit well with my intentions.  Furthermore, it was specific to a handful of courses where the 5 wood would be the club that I could reach par 5s and use off the tees on a couple of holes without swinging out of my shoes.

    However, you might want to try out the new 915s on the course.  And with what you are saying about ball flight, sounds like a hybrid would be a better fit.

    Good luck.

    Carry only one fairway in the bag and it is the old 15* lowered to a 14.25* and I normally use it off the tee on certain par fours where accurancy is a premium.  Now for the hybrids, I am so sold on them.  I carry a 915h 17.25, 913h 18.50, and 913h 23.25.  At 68 years of age not as long as I used to be but can play with most good amateurs in the area.  The hybrids give me an edge.   Like the launch and carry and roll.  The new 915 is a long club.  I normally hit it off the deck and leave my faiway in the bag.  Have more control over my ball with it.   Feel they will help my handicap come down this year and make me more competitive in tournaments.

    @Bubba

    Thank you so much for your insight.  I hit the ball high and no trouble getting the Pro V1 airborne. I would definitely need to get on Trackman or GC2 to see what my numbers truly are for the respective clubs. I feel that one of the clubs has to leave the bag so I load up on another wedge. Recently, there is just something with the ball flight I was getting hitting the 5 wood and it was really appealing. The Hybrid felt way too high.  Then again, I don't have the 915's in the bag yet. Still awaiting an opportunity meet with my personal Titleist fitter for on course trial for visual and feel confirmation. I know the 915's are the real deal and want to see how I can use them to bring my game to next level.

    @Jason

    Thanks for the thoughts! I wouldn't say I'm long but I hit the ball well.  The 220-230 range is pretty good spot for me to hit a hybrid.  I like the 909 but feel like the ball balloons a touch. Then again, I may just be crazy. Need to get on course with some technology to figure this out.

    @Ben

    I would of loved to read what you had for insight and responses regarding this matter. I feel like we are always looking for an edge or improvement from what we were doing last. Since I've been fitted, I am in love and chasing that ball flight and distance I saw during the session.  Thanks very much for your feedback!

    I will keep you posted on the developments.  Thanks to smart, awesome, talented golf geeks on Team Titleist...we can trust and go to the source for information.

    ben I & CoolBreeze, I'm going the other way. I bought a 913Fd and can't hit it worth a hoot. I've decided to set the 3 wood to 16.5 degrees and put the 24 deg. and 27 deg. hybrid into play. Time will tell.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             steve b

    Gota tell ya, I really enjoy your post. At the same time I relize, I'm not in your league. Only been playing for a year and a half.

    But I have brought my hndcp down to 16. I do however share your love of Titleist. I'm a super down in southern N.J. OceanCounty G.C.@ Atlantis. If you ever visit the Jersey shore, look me up. Your round is on me.

    Play Well,

    I am always looking to tweak the bag as I improve and the swing feels better and better. Not sure if anyone else is like me as to a very visual and feel combination player.  Having been fit before by the wonderful Titleist Fitters at Stow Acres for the 915 line, I still need to see and feel in on the course after on the range with a launch monitor. I am looking to get with my main guy in Providence to get on full TrackMan and GameChanger2 as he will be equipped and I can take then compare on course.

    I agree very much with Bubba and those who recommend being fit, it is indeed a great and refreshing way to see your numbers and get set up properly!

    My shots are all high launch, high spin, with drop & plug with maybe losing a half a yard all carry.  With the 915 I get it all...high launch, low spin, better carry, and added yardage on roll.

    This consideration is pretty much with thought of aggressive play where I love the opportunity to go at par 5's in two. However, it is calculative-aggressive play. Crazy but not stupid if you know what I mean.

    Maybe, I just like all other crazy and fanatical Titleist Loyalists that just can't let go of a club that feels oh so buttery.  Tell me if you can relate.  I enjoy hearing and learning from all you as we TeamTitleist Members are a Special Bunch.

    Thanks for the feedback and graciously extending the invite!  It is great appreciated and I hope, if ever I make it there - possibly a TeamTitleist Golf Tour? ; D  that the round would be graced with your presence!

    I had a 17* 5-wood in my bag, but very rarely used it because it just got up to high for me and I wasn't consistent with it. I just found myself a 21* hybrid, and granted I haven't had it on the course, I think it will be a better club for me. I needed something that could fill the gap better between my 3-wood and my 4-iron. I feel like the hybrid will let me flight the ball a little bit more to adjust for yardage and trajectory. I did get to hit it on a simulator last week and had at least one shot that went about 220 which is further than I ever recall hitting my 5-wood off the deck or teed up. I think it was largely due to my ability to get a better strike with the hybrid and perhaps a little more roll. Nonetheless, I think I already prefer the hybrid over the 5-wood.

  15. Hello Breeze,

    I have Mashies 5W and 2H, both 18 loft but the 5W shaft is +1.5" longer. I normally carry the 2H because I hit it higher than the 5W so it stops more quickly (hopefully staying on the green). I also love the 2H for those little bump-and-run shots out of the greenside rough. I hit the 5W farther overall, +15-18 yards, I'm guessing due to the longer shaft. I added the 5W because of a half dozen or so courses I play which have big par 5's that I simply couldn't reach with the hybrid. Normally though, I do carry the 2H.

    I guess I am somewhat different in my bag set-up as I carry both a 5 wood and a 3H since I get a 15 yard difference which works perfectly for my distances and game.
