  1. Hello,

I just purchase a great used 712 AP2 set. I was wondering if I could bend my 712 AP2 irons strong and not see any changes in the irons. I am wanting to bend my 5-PW one degree stronger and my 4 iron two degrees stronger to fit better with my wedges and hybrid golf club. Thanks!

    Hey Greyson,

Yeah, you can bend them strong and not notice the difference in terms of look.  I have mine bent 2 degrees strong and cannot see any visible difference.  The only way you would see a difference is if you put them side by side with another set of Ap2's that are not bent.

Bubba might better be able to answer that question, I know you can with the mb or cbs.  Not sure about the AP2s.

    Greyson,

What do you mean about not seeing any changes in your irons? If your intent is to modify them by making them one degree strong, you will be changing the play of the iron, and also the physical appearance possible (could be debatable if the human eye can tell one degree, I'm not sure since I have never had to do this to any of my sets.)

Ultimately, your answer is yes, you can do this. A standard golf shop, or fitting center will be able to do this. I would advise you to not try it yourself unless you have experience in doing so professionally. It is very easy to do these modifications, and also recommended by a lot of folks to have your set checked either frequently or at the end of each year in case any changes happened during the season from general play.

    Good luck!

  5. I was wondering if bending my irons 1 to 2 degrees strong at a golf shop will change the playability of the 712 AP2s. I have read that if you bend 1 degree strong you lower the bounce on the iron. Will that change the playability of the irons dramatically? Will I be digging too much? A 4 iron only has 1 degree of bounce standard so will I have negative bounce when bent two degrees strong? Is that ok? Thanks for everybody for your help!

Hi Greyson,  Bending your irons strong will reduce the bounce of the club.  So if you are steep or tend to take a pretty good divot, you may not want to bend them more than a degree.  What bounce does is keep the leading edge from digging into the ground.  The 4 iron will have a negative bounce if you bend them 2 degrees.  Whether you can still hit the ball in the air and make good contact is dependent on your swing.
  7. Thanks everybody for the help! I am now thinking I am just going to bend my 712 Ap2 irons to the 714 AP2 specs so my gaps will match up better with my wedges. To do this I will need to bend the 6 iron - PW 1 degree stronger. Should I see any difference in 1 degree stronger irons? Will the clubs dig more or enough to tell a difference? If anything I am a digger in the golf swing. I will also need to bend my irons 2 degrees flat according to a lie board.

AP2 irons are forged and can be bent with no problem, BUT I would recommend taking them to someone who does this for a living. When you start messing around with the hozzels and stress on clubs you need to know what you are doing. With all due respect, I am not saying you do not, but club fitters do this all the time and if they mess it up then they can replace the club. They know how much torque to put on the hozzel. I would never ever think of doing this on my own. Best of luck....Chuck

Great answer Blake. If they are not bent properly you can change the lie fairly easily unintentionally.  The bounce angle will also change when making the clubs stronger or weaker.  Never go more than 2 degrees when making adjustments.

Forged irons should be checked every year or 2 anyway for loft/lie. Titleist does recommend no more than +/- 2 degrees from factory and you should be ok. Any more and there is a risk of the stress cracks in the hosel area (primarily cosmetic). You might as well get a distance gap before bending. We're not robotic enough to predict that exactly 3 or 4 degrees is the correct gap empirically. A good tune-up is a good tune-up regardless of the final loft gaps.

  12. Just curious but, can I bend a set of titleist cb718 to the titleist ap2 718 specs? Pros and cons?
