I consider myself old, but I am younger than the 14 club rule added to the Rules of Golf in 1939.
I really dislike that rule, but I abide by it.
I carry 6 irons (4 through 9) in my bag.
I carry 5 wedges (48, 52, 56, 60, 64).
Add a driver and a putter.
Now, I am up to 13 clubs.
I added the Titleist 16.5 degree 3 wood, really a 4 wood, this year as my 14th club.
Now, I want to pick up a 21 degree hybrid. But that would be 15 clubs.
Something has to go. Well, you say, get rid of the 64 degree wedge. Why carry 5 wedges in the first place?
But consider the gap between clubs.
My driver is adjusted to 11.25 degrees, a 16.5 degree FW, the 4 through 6 iron are 23, 26, 29 - - 3 degree gaps. The 7 through 9 irons are 32, 36, 40 - - 4 degree gaps.
So why should I only carry 4 wedges with 6 degree gaps? The wedges are my scoring clubs. With 4 degree gaps, each wedge gives me 10 yards distance difference, plus or minus.
That 21 degree hybrid would fill the gap between my 4 wood and my 4 iron.
Anybody else in favor of a 15 club limit?
