  1. Hello TT...I am looking for feedback on a fairway wood vs. a hybrid. Specifically, what benefits would an 18/19 degree fairway give against a 19 degree hybrid? Any disadvantages of one vs. the other?

    Enjoy!

It will. E personal preference on what you like to hit more. If you are addressing a certain shot or distance gap I would say go get hit or try out the two side by side with different shafts and lofts. In general the hybrid will launch higher and the fairway wood will roll out more.

    Paul,

I do not use a fairway wood currently. I've tried over the years but have found that, for me, there is a loss of control with the longer shaft lengths that the fairways have. I carry 3 Titleist hybrids, 21, 24, 27 that I have tweaked from time to time for loft and lie. I find that I can control the shorter hybrids a bit better. I must also say that I am 68 years old so reaching a par 5 in two is something I watch the pros do on TV, so having the extra distance that the fairway might give me is not as big an issue as putting the ball in the fairway for the easy Vokey wedge for the third shot. Most of responses you'll probably get is to go get properly fit and I would echo that. My take on the differences would be that the fairways would give you some added distance and the hybrids might give you some better control. I've also heard that the hybrids are a bit easier to hit out of the rough due to the smaller head size. I can't speak to Mike's comment as to higher launch for hybrids since I don't use the fairway but for me the hybrids do get up in the air pretty well. Good luck with your comparisons. Fairways and greens.

I think it just comes down to personal preference. Some guys will have a slightly different ball flight between the two and possibly slightly longer distance from the FW depending on the individual. However, for me, performance between the 2 is negligible. I prefer the look of the hybrids and carry a 17 and 23 degree. My 910H 17 degree is only about 8 yards shorter than my 913 15 degree 3-wood.
  5. Hi Paul,

I actually had the same question and for me the smaller head hybrid made the most sense coming out of the rough :) where I spend some time. It absolutely has become one of the most used and versatile clubs in my bag round after round. For me, it's the 19* 816 H1 with the 15* fairway as my next step up.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Seems the hybrid is easier to play than my 5metal- it's shorter and more forgiving. Also, I've been told this, only to find it's true that my 5metal does or had tendencies to go up or much higher than I want to play it.

Hybrids can be used like an iron and the fairways are generally better with more of a sweeping motion. So most will have a preference based on their own comfort level with one or the other. Most prefer a hybrid, but TW is known for carrying a 5W along with his 3W.

Don't forget you can also, hip and putt with hybrids

Hybrids are much easier to hit from the rough. I tend to hit fairway woods a bit farther than a hybrid of the same loft. I can shape a hybrid much easier than a fairway wood. I play 917 driver and fairways and 916 hybrids.

Being a short hitter. I carry two 816h1s in my bag. A 17* and a 21*. Off the tee I hit the 17* around 210. Around 200 off the ground. You might test these clubs and off the ground they are very accurate.

I have tried many fairway woods in recent years and most shafts are too long. The shorter hybrid shaft increases control

I picked up a 915 fd with 18* loft last summer. I'm playing it a little hooked and with an Aldila Rogue 80 gram S shaft. Previously I hadn't played a 5-wood since the late '60s, hitting long irons (1 through 3 irons) instead. I replaced the 1 through 4 irons over the last fifteen years with hybrids. Currently I play a Titleist 915HD 18* set as strong as I can and an 915HD 20* set as weak as I can, both with Aldila 85 gram stiff hybrid shafts. I bent my 714 Titleist AP2 five iron one degree strong and play the rest of the AP2's at standard loft. Everything is an inch over the current standard length. I can hit the Titleist five wood a lot higher and further than any hybrid I've ever hit. I've been playing golf for over 60 years and my current index is 4.4. My driver swing speed is still over 100 mph. You have to try that Titleist five wood!

The hybrid will fly lower and offer more control. The fairway metal might go farther because of the longer shaft.

I was an old school golfer for a long time but have joined the new technology that hybrids offer. My longest iron is a 6. The rest of my set is 5,4,2 H, 3W and D. Hybrids have all of the advantages of your longer irons and fairway woods plus they are easier to use out of fairway bunkers and the rough. JMHO

I use fairway woods only. I have a 3 wood, actually adjusted to a 4 wood loft and a 7 wood. I have tried hybrids many times over the past years, but just can't hit them consistently. My longest iron is a 5 iron. I use the 5 iron, 7 wood and 4 wood to lay up to my perfect distance on par 5's.
  16. Thanks, all, for the feedback. That why I love the TT community. Honest views and opinions, and respect all the way around. You've given me some solid advice. I have the hybrid already and was/am considering the 5w. Still may, but for now the hybrid seems to be the best for the bag.

    Enjoy!
