I want to purchase a new driver. My choice is the 917D2 or the new TS2. I have read much about both and I do not know where to turn. I have heard that the TS is a better driver, but I do not know if the kinks have been worked out of it yet. I know the 917D2 is a good performer and it is the last Titleist generation driver. Who can help with this decision!!! I would appreciate any advice, good I hope.....

I have a 917D3 and was my first Titleist driver. I am waiting to be fitted for the TS3 as I dont prefer the TS2 driver shape. I have already compared my 917 vs the TS3 and there is no comparison on the launch monitor. The TS line is leaps and bounds better than 917 drivers across the board. My 917 F3 fairway wood was amazing though. I dont know how that stacks up to this years model in fairway woods but will probably upgrade for continuity and keep a similar shaft.
  3. I currently game a 915 D2 but recently tried a ts2. I gained over4 on the swing speed and am getting fitted for the ts3 next week. Definitely liked the feel

The 917 will be leftover merchandise on the rack. The TS2/3's can be custom fit and ordered. It comes down to "is the off the rack 917 for about $200 less still a bargain if not custom fit to you?"

Went for a fitting with the Title product specialist in October for the new TS2 driver. I currently own the 917D2 driver and was fitted for it by the same individual. He spent almost an hour with me on a driving range, which I prefer over a inside bay fitting. We tried a number of shafts and lengths and even used my Fujikura Tour shaft in the TS2 and could not get more than 3 yards. Based on the Trackman numbers we just could not justify making a change for me. The numbers were identical. I STRONGLY recommend that you go see a Titleist certified fitter and tried both heads with as many combinations as he will put in the drivers. Only then can you be sure you have the right driver. Both are awesome weapons, but you need to get the one that is right for YOU. I went from a 915D2 and picked up over ten yards with the 917D2. My 917D2 is set at 11.25, my ball speed is 132, and spin is 1800-2200, my swing speed 93 mph. At 73 yrs I am still hanging in there. My carry was 225 with each driver.
  6. Glad to hear that coming from somebody as reputable as you Chuck. I have been to 3 different fittings for the new TS line and they still don’t out perform my 917D2. My original fitting for my 917 was spot on and haven’t had to change it one bit. When the new TS line came out and I posted that it wasn’t better for me, boy did I get bashed. Glad there are others that didn’t benefit that much either to make the jump.

I went from a 915D2 to the TS2 and saw 17 yards carry. The TS spins less was the main reason. I got fit by the Titleist rep. last fall. He said the higher swing speeds are seeing the biggest gains. But I would recommend waiting until you can get outside and hit both side by side.

Chuck, it is very impressive at age 73 you still have the ball speed at 132.

    Great job.

As for me, I think the custom shafts are making the drives straighter.

Was fitted last night for ts2, so much better performance versus my 917 d3, ( I have purple oban kyoshi shaft) best shaft was tensei blue 50, exotic not always best.

Take the advice above. Go get fit by a Titleist fitter. I'm fortunate enough to get lots of credit each year in the pro shop, and even though I'll get a new set of irons every few years or so and a new bag now and then, so change drivers more than most with the credits. I had the 917 and liked it, but found a competitor driver to be a little more forgiving when I'm not totally on top of the game. I got the TS2 last fall just before heading out for an 8 day vacation/tourney. I found it to give me everything I wanted in the Titleist performance, and now be forgiving on mishits like the "other" driver I used once and a while to the point of where that "other" driver was given to someone else. Not needed anymore. That was the difference I found between 917 and TS2. But take advantage of the fittings like Chuck and some of the other guys said.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the advice. I will wait a month or so and get fitted for a new driver when I can hit some golf balls in the better weather. It may be the new TS2 or the new TS3. I just need anew driver to get my game going. Thanks again for the advice.
