Hitting Hybrids

  1. Does anyone else have trouble hitting hybrids? Every time I look down at address...I feel like I'm hitting a 5 wood or something. I've always been told that you should treat it like an iron but that has been extremely hard for me. I play the 816 H1 Hybrid at 19 degrees loft. Any advice would be helpful. I'm at the point where I'm thinking about selling it and buying one of the new utility 3 irons. I always could hit a 3 iron really well but when I bought a new iron set...I went with the hybrid instead of the 3 iron. Thanks for the advice.

I currently have two Hybrids in my bag, both are TS2 models with the HZRDUS smoke black stiff shafts. They replaced my 4 and 5 irons as I was having trouble hitting both after back surgery. I have the on set at 21 degrees and the other at 24 degrees, which were the degrees of both my 4 and 5 irons.

I have T200 irons with the AMT Tour White shafts, and after back surgery I now hit a draw where my original ball flight was a fade. Also, prior to surgery I hit both my 4 and 5 irons well, but had trouble with fairway woods off the deck, however that reversed after surgery. I really enjoy both my hybrids as the ball flight is slightly higher than the irons and I feel confident they will hold the greens.

My driver swing speed averages between 103 and 106 and I hope this helps you.

I have a 21 degree 818 H2 hybrid; the H2 profile is smaller than the H1. I also like to hit long irons, and when the switch was made to a hybrid I wanted one that looked and had performance characteristics similar to a long iron.

If you can find an 818 H1 and H2, compare them side by side. They're very different. The 818 H1 is for someone who likes the look of a fairway wood, and the H2 is for someone who likes the look of an iron.

Been carrying the combination of a 7 wood and 27 hybrid for a long time. Until the 816H1 there was little difference between a 24 and 27 in distance. Also found that a shorter and heavier shaft keeps the ball straight. My 23 and 27 have Diamana S70+ S. I also have a 25 with R. I play them at A2 and -0.75” for D2 swingweight (use Excel Rg oversized).

7 wood is 41” with Diamana 72R. 3W is 42” (hard stepped Diamana 60 lite). Driver is 44” Bassara (A flex keeps it straighter).

    Irons are S300.

Why fight your tendencies? If you always hit long irons well and struggle with fairway woods, sure, jump on the new utility irons. Same thing for those of us that struggle with long irons but play fairway woods pretty well. We should gravitate towards multiple fairway woods and hybrids. Great thing about Titleist giving us all options is we can adjust our sets to match our strengths and weaknesses. Have some fun out there!
  6. I also switched to H2 hybrids in place of a 3 and 4 iron. H2 sat better for my eye too.
Over the years I've switched back and forward a few times 3 and 4 iron or 3 and 4 hybrid.
I've come to the conclusion I struggle a bit with this length of club in general.
Driver, 3 wood fine, all other irons fine. but struggle in this area, I can hit my 5 iron the same distance as both at times.
I changed the shaft in my H2 this year to a stiff even flow from a firm which seems to have helped a bit. it seems to be more consistent for me.

After all this I am currently using a 19 degree H2 and a T-MB 4 iron so ended up in a mix of both.
Has just been trial and error for me and lots of £$£$£ but think I'm settled now.
I hit my hybrid, 4 and 5 iron from around the same position just behind where I would sit my 3 wood behind the ball, then further back for the other irons and more of a sweep with my hybrid.

I have an old 3 hybrid and had trouble hitting it at first. It took some getting used to but now I hit that club so well. It’s especially a great option for shots out of the rough. I think one of the problems people have is they do play it as an iron but come in too steep. You need to play it like an iron but you need to brush the ground and hit it up like a wood. But if you still find you can’t hit it then you should go back to hitting an iron.
  8. I have the 818 H2 19* hybrid, more iron like shape. My tendency is my swing gets more aggressive during the round, mostly with my irons, when I try to hit my 3 wood or hybrid at 100% it usually turns out bad. I find that I need to slow it down to get the best performance from it (75-80%)
  9. I rarely swing 100% even off the tee I've found that a 3/4 swing is smoother and I make much more solid contact on each shot that way. Trying to swing hard and go after it I don't make as solid contact as I do with the 3/4 swing and there isn't much difference in yardage either. Making solid contact with a smooth swing gives me my distance and control. Trying to rip it only causes more problems and that's what I'm teaching all my students solid contact and a smoother swing gives you a better shot and more control just let the club do the work.

Went to a teaching pro regarding hitting hybrids and told me I was trying to hit them like a fairway wood. Was somewhat taken back. He showed me that I should be hitting them like I would be hitting a long iron. Helped me improve hybrid issue.
  11. relaxing helps me and swing Slower and sweep not compress it like an iron. Watch for natural tendency of using a stronger grip. My advice.
