My irons are about 8 years old so it has been time to upgrade for a while now. I have hit the T-200s in my local golf shop but wanted to do a fitting outside on the grass. I booked a time at a Titleist Thursday event. I currently play TM R-11's with Dynamic Gold XP shafts (the 2012/2013 version at 120 grams), with 1/2 inch over standard length and 3 degrees upright. I have felt like they might be a little too upright as my clubhead path coming down is better (has been too steep in the past).
I hit my 32 degree 7-iron 175-180 yards with a medium flight. I am 6'3" and driver swing speed is 110-112 mph.
I tried several shafts, including the Project X 6.0, Project X LZ 6.0, the AMT Black S300, and a KBS shaft (don't recall which model). All in 1/2 inch over standard and 2 degrees upright. I wasn't hitting ideal numbers on the launch monitor and the ball flight was not ideal- a little lower than we wanted. We tried the AMT Black in one inch over standard and 1 degree upright. That turned out to be the right combination.
I was surprised about the change in lenght of the shaft from my prior sets but I am not going to question it. The Titleist rep knew what he was doing. And the typical measurement to determine club lenght says I should be one inch over standard. I just kept playing 1/2 over as that is what I always played. It was pretty clear when we found the right fit.
We put the order in before I left the range, 4-GW. Can't wait to get them.
I will then get a u500 to fill the gap between 3 -wood and 4-iron, and will need to pick up a 52 degree Vokey to fill the gap btween the 48 degree T-200 GW and my 56 degree Vokey.
Put the new T200s in the bag this week. First round with them today. Swing was a little off but I hit some really good iron shots. They are more forgiving than i thought they would be. Ball flight is higher but still penetrating.
I got steep on a couple of shots and the turf interaction was great.
As I thought, I am about a club longer with these compared to my prior irons. 48 degree GW that matches the set is about 10 yards longer than my previous Gw, so need to gwt a 52 degree Vokey to split the difference between the 48 and my 56 vokey.
Usually takes me a couple of rounds to get used to new irons. I like what I see so far.
