I’ve a set of T200 irons 5 to 48 wedge which I like and I get on with them very well. The only problem is with the 5 iron, I’m ok off a tee, which I like to do but not very good off the fairway, I struggle with a good strike and getting it airborne. I do have an equivalent hybrid which I use quite a lot, but sometimes I would like to use the 5 iron. Interested in what your thoughts are on other alternatives.

A lot would have to do with your swing, which we don't know anything about. And based on your comment, confidence is also something to consider. It's hard to hit any club well if you have little confidence standing over the ball.

Personally, I used to never be able to hit a great 5 iron, because I was sure I wouldn't unless I got lucky. But, over time, making minor swing changes through guidance from club pros, not only do I hit a 5 iron well, but I also play a 4i, which I count on often, both from the tee and off the turf. I was playing 2 hybrids a few years back, but once I got my swing in order and began to hit my 5 iron so well, I knew a 4 iron would not be too much different. So, for the past two years I have been playing a custom-shafted 4i/21* H2 hybrid/917 3w/TS Dr set-up at the top end of my bag most days and have never looked back. I can't remember the last time I had two hybrids in the bag.

So after that mouthful, I would suggest a quick assessment of your swing from a teaching pro, explaining your 5i/hybrid dilemma concern ahead of time. Let him/her give you a few pointers/tweaks/adjustments if necessary so that your swing is more consistent. Then try the 5i side by side the hybrid using your newly tweaked swing to see which gives you the best results AND fits your mind and eye better.

I have found that a few minutes here and there with a friendly club pro makes all my clubs work a lot better. My 2 cents.

Maybe a quick lesson with your pro focusing primarily on your 5 iron would be beneficial.

The longer the shaft, the more small faults are accentuated. Hence the common perception that amateurs shouldn't try to hit a 3/4 iron, and maybe not a 5 iron. As others have noted, a pro can let you know if your swing can be improved to hit the 5I off the turf or if your better option is to leave the 5 iron at home.

I don’t have any issues with the rest of the set and as single figure player I strike them very well and I’m very consistent with them. I get the lesson and the confidence bit, probably more of a confidence issue, as it comes good on a 190yd par 3. The only other thing was to look at the T300/400
5 iron, or take it out all together.
