I just got my 910 D3 a few days ago and have hit it quite a bit, range sessions and a round today, shot 81 which is better than my average of about 85. Only problem was that I didn't have much consistency hitting the ball on the center of the clubface so I used my 3wood and my hybrid off the tee and it worked wonders.

After my round I hit the range to work on hitting my driver and one thing I finally did was choke up on the club a bit, maybe 3/4ths of an inch and wouldn't you know I was hitting every single ball right in the middle and it was a lot better.

If I cut my shaft down, it should yield the same results and the head pro told me the weight MAY be a little different but depending on the amount I cut the shaft down. Also, will my shot dispersion be a little tighter?

I would  try playing a few rounds choking up on the club just as you describe before you make anything permanent.  You won't have to worry too much if cut it down 1/2".

I have had the same issue in the past, and now when I get a new driver I always have 1/2" cut off of the grip end. I still choke-up about 1/4"-1/2" as well and I consistently hit the ball dead center. I have noticed I am also able to work the ball better and my shot grouping is tighter as well. And your pro is correct, it will change the swing weight only slightly. My recommendation is to start with 1/2" and see if that works. If you start off by taking too much off, the swing weight will change DRAMATICALLY!!! If you want the shaft to stiffen up, my recommendation is to cut-off of the tip end. But like I said, I had the 1/2" cut-off the grip end since I already swing a stiff shaft. Hope this helps.

Lie angle and shaft length are 2 factors that work together to fit your swing. If choking down improves your ball striking, then the shaft length is too long for the lie angle, OR the lie angle is too high to fit the shaft length.

Since the lie angle on the 910 is adjustable, I would suggest making the lie angle a little flatter before cutting the shaft.

If you change the lie angle and find the change was bad, it cost $0 to change it back. If you cut the shaft and find it was bad it cost $$$$ to change it back. Just a thought.

I would like to point out, you left driver in the bag and shot 4 strokes better than your avg. hmmmmm

I agree with RC on choking down a 1/2 -3/4 of an inch and trying this out a few more times before cutting down your shaft.  There are pros that do this when hitting driver anyway and obviously have been successful.  THey have a standard length shaft but grip down on the grip which effectively shortens up the shaft.  Many mid to high handicap players would benefit by gripping down with the driver or getting a shorter shaft as they have a difficult time making contact in the center of clubface.  One thing you will probably notice besides making more consistent contact by gripping down is the height of your shot will be a little lower as you will have a little less ball spin due to effectively shortening the shaft by gripping down. Best of Luck!

If you cut your shaft down by 3/4 in. it will change the basic characteristics of the shaft (kick point, flex, weight).  If you watch the pros on tv, most of them grip their drivers about 1/2 to 3/4 in down the shaft.  I think you are making to much over 3/4/of an inch.

Additionally, try altering your set up.  Position the ball during your set up off the toe of the driver, move the ball.  Again, if you watch the pros, some set the ball on the inside of the club,  some on the toe and some in the middle.  Remember we are talking about golf and one swing or set up does not fit all as is evident by the changebility o f the new drivers.

I played on Sunday and since choking down a bit and it helped put the ball right on the center of the clubface, but I am thinking I need to change the lie angle but don't know to what setting, I am still hitting a fade and sometimes a push fade. All my other clubs I can hit the ball and work it right to left, I am thinking it must be the lie angle or something if I can hit my 3 wood and hybrid along with my irons fine. I would think if it was a swing problem all my other clubs would be affected which they aren't.

I was fit for this driver and shaft combination and had some good swings that day, but problem is I don't know what setting the driver was on.

If you were fit for that driver, the place where you were fit should have a listing of your specs.

I would assume that your driver is set open.  Refer to your driver literature for directions on how to make club adjustments.  Advise that you keep a note pad with your club settings.  This is good for referral  and allows you to experiment with different settings without forgetting what your original setting was.

Trim 1/4" at a time and test. Choking up is a great trial. 1/4" can be a big difference  play a few rounds before going shorter.  Each 1/4 " will decrease SW by 1 1/2 points.

Thanks for all the replies, I went ahead and cut down the shaft to 44.25. It has really helped in making contact on the center of the club face and my length has actually increased, due to a few swing adjustments and hitting it on the sweet spot. I also hit 10/14 fairways this Sunday and I didn't miss the others by very much so I was a lot happier with my driving Sunday and I can fully enjoy my 910 D3!
