How much difference in results would one see (on average) with a stiff shaft that is 10 Grams heavier?  Reason I ask, i hit the 910FD with the 73 PX shaft that my driver is coming in, and I see that the stock PX shaft for the FD is an 83 Gram... was wondering if results would be fairly similar?  Swing speed 90-100mp.

    Thanks

They should feel pretty similar.  With a stock 3-wood being 2 inches shorter (43 inches) than your driver (45 inches), the shaft needs to be a little heavier in the 3-wood to make it comparable to the driver shaft.  Best of luck with the new clubs!

only thing i would be worried about is the fact that its 10 grams, 10 grams is a lot of weight when talking golf shafts, that 10 grams is going to make the shaft feel stiffer, not only that but it is going to result in a somewhat lower ball flight. before you do anything drastic i would consult your pga pro or teacher or local club fitter before you do anything.

ps. the worst part that can come out of getting a heavier shaft than needed is that its going to mess with the tempo of your swing also, and when that happens, bad things happen. if it were up to me, id ask a local club fitter and maybe do a quick fitting for your desired club. most proffesionals hit a 83 gram fairway wood shaft, and they swing at the least 20 mph more than you.

  4. Hi Keith,

You definitely need to be fit. I play the 61grm 'ilima in my 910D2. Ryan Crysler recommended but only as a starting point the 71 gram versionas normally people find a heavier shaft is required in a F/W. This didn't work that well for me and Ryan suggested try the other shaft family quoting several players have a heavier shaft froma different shaft family in their fairway. I found the 75 gram kai'li worked better for my17 degree 910  The 'ilima is more tip active the kai'li mid bend. The the heavier weight will lower backspin but it won't necessarily feel stiffer. Thats, more to do with the bend point of the respective shaft.( usually the higher the bend point the stiffer it will feel).

There is some good info  in the driver fitting area about the effect of shafts on launch angle and backspin.

    Regards Chris

let me follow on with this question, if you reduce the weight in the head will that have a similar effect as having a lighter shaft?  or what does making the head lighter do?

    Thanks Guys.

making the head lighter will just make the club in itself lighter. that doesnt have the same effect as lowering the weight of the shaft, the weight of the shaft has a lot more purposes than just weight, like i said earlier, it messess with the tempo of your swing, and messes with the ball flight, dispersion pattern, spin...etc.... thats why you need to be fitted. also lowering the weight in the head is complicated and can be an issue in  your game if you dont get fitted to that specific weight setting on your club head.

    GET FITTED!!!!

    IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!

Do you know what effect, if any, changing the weight in the head will have on ball flight?  I have a 910F 15deg 3 wood and i was thinking of going with a 9 or 12 weight to replace the stock 7gram to promote higher launch and balance the club more to my liking!   I am looking for a weak 3w or strong 4wood.

changing the weight on the head will change the ball flight a little. Itll be a slightly higher ball flight if the weight is taken out of the club i believe. i may be wrong. if youve ever seen tour players put lead tape on their clubs, its because they want to alter the weight a little bit. it depends where you take the weight out of on the club, in the fairway your talking about, it should like i said make the ball flight a little higher. but again, thats not my specialty in info.

Changing the weight in the bottom just 2 to 5 grams won't affect the ballflight at all.  It'll change the swingweight slightly, but it's not enough of a difference to the head to affect the cg and in turn, the ballflight.
