I recently purchased the 17 and 21 degree hybrid with standard length and the Kali 80 by Mitsubishi for Titleist Regular flex shafts per the club fitters recommendation that based on my swing speed with a driver of 94 mph average this is what I should use. I have trouble hitting them staraight and get extreme hooks and slices. I had the frequency checked. I found the shafts are  254 and 261 CPM. Basically for this length club (40" and 41") this is a Ladies flex and 20 CPM below regular. I find it hard to believe this is even labeled a regular stiffness. Obviously I need a stiffer shaft and previously played with the Diamana Blue Hybrid for Titleist that measured frequency of 276 and 284 CPM.

What shaft would you recommend. I would like the stiffness and frequency at 276 for 40" and 284 CPM for 41". I would also prefer the shaft be as light as possible as my Driver and 3 wood use Mitsubishi Diamana Iliama Regular flex with shaft weights of 63 grams. My irons are Graphite Design Tour AD-65 Iron shafts with stiff flex (1/2 inch long) with 68 gram weights. I do not see a Titleist Hybrid shaft that is this light but do prefer to be as close as possible for feel and distance gaps.

I'm sorry you learned the hard way that you can't fit clubs based on clubhead speed!

I would recommend trying the Hybrid illiama shafts found here:  http://www.titleist.com/golf-clubs/shafts/default.aspx?tab=3

You have a unique set of clubs with shafts weighing around 65 grams a piece so these should fall right in line.

Do you know the frequency of the Iliama shaft shown there in the 910H Titleist Hybrid in regular and stiff flexes. This Ilima is a made for Titleist shaft same as the Kalil I purchased. If it is as far off the rated stiffness as the made for Titleist Kalil I will have the same problem. The issue is not the fitting by club head speed. I know the swing weight, MOI, Launch Angle and Frequency that works well for me.  The problem is no one seems to know what the shaft/head specificationss are (other than D3 Swing Weight and a flex rating that is not accuate). You can hit them ok (flight looks good, can not see well enough for distance) on the range with good lies from the mats but are not what you need on the course (especially out of the rough).

Completely understand.  I don't know the particular frequency once assembled.  We fit based on ball performance and different shafts/brands/weights do not correlate when it comes to flex designation.  Only thing I can suggest is trying them out rather than comparing numbers on paper.  Can't go wrong with what you see, feel, and evaluate!

If only that were true. Hard to find all the alternatives. Even big shops carry only a couple options. Hit off mat or into net with small bucket of trial balls and no info on what you hit other than loft and type of shaft. It is all to easy to get wrong club for on course play. Guess I will go to local guy and buy a non titleist shaft where you know what you start with. They always come out very close. To bad the big equipment manufacturers do not provide the basic info needed. It is so simple if you know head weight and shaft frequency to a standard. Thanks for input

  6. Hi Frank,  It sounds like your swing with the hybrid is way different to the driver.  For the 'ilima shaft your using given the problem you have with the hybrid I'd have expected you to be spraying balls all over the place, but as your not you must be trying to hit the hybrid much harder particularly out of the rough.  ( sounds like your making a very agressive transition at the top of the back swing off of a shorter swing, something which just isn't there when you hit the driver or fairway.)  This causes the hook. You then probably subconciously try to adjust and then the club stays open as you swing slower trying to find the right tempo. Suggest you try the kai'li in stiff or x flex.  Given this will lower the ball flight a bit you then might need the 'ilima in stiff or x flex to get your desired trajectory.

If you look at the spec for only Mitsubishi hybrid listed by the OEM ( the fubuki) you'll see that just on swing speed they recommend a stiff flex. Sorry I can't tell you what cpms the shafts are but I can tell you that even if the shaft was in the cpm range you quote it doesn't mean it will play like the blue for Titleist, as  bend profile  tip stiffness etc can make a big difference.

Suggest you ask your outlet to lend you a couple of shafts off the fitting cart so you can try them  in your club head out on the course.  As Ryan says this is what really matters.

    Hope this helps

    Regards Chris
