  1. I am buying new clubs and I need help; Which club should i make my 14th club. Should I take a 3 iron or and 50*. I can hit both well, and i have a club head speed of 95 MPH, so i could go either way. My current club configuration is 9*, 14*, 17* (hybrid), 4-PW (45*), 54*, 60* and a putter. Just like my issue with golf balls; Distance vs. Greenside control.

    Thanks!

You have a very strong hybrid and a very strong pitching wedge leaving two gaps in your clubs.  I use my 50 degree a lot as it is my 100 to 110 club.  If I were you, I would replace the hybrid with a 21 degree and add the 50.  that might leave a gap between the 3wood and the hybrid but I choke up on the 3 wood to fill that gap. --Jerry

Why not use a 19 deg hybrid and choke down on IT (little easier to choke down on a hybrid vs a wood) and add the 50? I personally think what might be more effective is to use a 5 wood (19 deg), 4H (24 deg), 5-PW, 50-54-60. There would be about a 15 yard gap between the 5W and the 4H, and another 15 yard gap between the 4H and the 5 iron. I find a fairway wood much easier to hit than a long hybrid, personally (I found it difficult to hit a 3H or 4H so I use a 21 deg 7 wood).

I think 8 times out of ten, I'd go with the wedge because you will most likely use it more often.  The other two times?  Go with both!  And based on tournaments/playing conditions, make the decision pre-round.

  5. Thanks to you both! Right now, I'm thinking having a 3h, 4h, 5-PW iron set and decide prior to my round. Thanks

I'd go with the 50 deg wedge. Your current setup is driver (9), strong 3W (14), 17H and 4-PW. You can choke down 1/2 inch with the 17H to hit 3 iron distance. I'm more of a short game person, so my setup is 1-3-7 woods, 28.5 lofted fairway wood (or a 5H), 6-PW (this is a set of Eye 2, so the PW is 50 deg and the 9 iron is 46 deg), Spin Milled 54-11 c-c, 60-07, 64-07 and a 2 way chipping iron. I have preferred a 7 wood over using a 3 or 4 iron hybrid because it is a lot less work and much easier to hit. There is only a 15 yard gap between it and the 3 wood. I also find a 5 wood a lot easier to hit than a 2H (17 deg). Understanding that Titleist does not make a 7 wood... Assuming your intent is to retain the 17H.... 24H , 5-PW allows room for the 50 wedge. Since there is a 7 deg gap between the 17H and the 24H, you would choke down about 1/2 inch to bridge the gap. If you want to be a wedge wizard, 5 wood (19 deg), 24H, 6-PW would also allow room for a 64 deg wedge. Or you could carry a high bounce sand wedge in the mix.

I would suggest that you re-gap your hybrid and add the extra wedge. Most of the game is played inside 120 yards and having a better chance at improving your short game will definately take shots off your score.

Exactly - you benefit more with extra wedges. Replace the 17H with either a 910F 19 deg fairway wood or the 910H 19 hybrid (matter of personal preference). They can be adjusted +1.5 deg or -.75 deg.

I've just streamlined my set. I replaced the 6 and 7 iron with a 34 deg hybrid because it is way less work to use (I took the 34H out and put in the chipping iron since I needed something for a left handed shot; I shortened the 34H since the above post and it is now ridiculously easy to hit). I added a Vokey 256-14 sand wedge so that I have one available for thick turf and super soft sand.
