So I recently purchased the 910D3 with the Aldila RIP X Stiff shaft that I was fitted for with my PGA Professional who I work with every week. The RIP gave me the best performance, bringing my flight down, spin down, and it seemed to be the best option.

Now the problem. I have my driver set to the maximum amount of draw on the titleist matrix. So right now I have it at A3. And my ball keeps going right. It is not a slice, but it has a strong fade on it. Me and my pro just can't figure it out. I understand that people say if it is too stiff it will go right, but I swing my driver 130mph, so I don't think that I am in something too stiff - maybe I need stiffer? So we decided to video my swing and analyze it on his V1 software, hoping that I was coming across the ball in order to make sense of my fade when my driver was set to max draw. Well I did 3 swings, one had a slight fade and the other 2 had bigger fades, and when we looked at the swings, they were all perfectly on plane and I was releasing through and not coming across it at all.

So at this point we are lost for words. We don't understand what is happening.

So do I need stiffer? Do I need added length like my previous driver? I hit all of my other clubs straight and maybe even the slightest draw. Any help would be greatly appreciated, seeing as I just spent $430 on a club that isn't performing the way my swing is.

    Thanks!

Did you say...you swing it 130mph!  That's awesome.

Do you have the launch data?  Love to see it.  I would also love to see your swing.  We use V1 as well.  Would you mind posting it n youtube or somewhere we we can see it?

    Ryan,

I will dig around for my sheet with all those numbers. I will also talk to my pro to see if he can send me the videos from yesterday. Should be able to post it tonight!

    Thanks

Ok so I couldn't get the videos from my pro (he's very busy and just left town), so here are some videos I got with my phone on the range. These are from about a week or so ago, and I have since started to bend at my knees just a touch more and have been drawing the ball now!

looks to me like you could do with extending a little bit more through the ball after impact, and because you're direction change is pretty agressive you may not be dropping the club back down on to plane every time. but it is quite hard to tell 'cause you're swinging the thing so damn fast!! only so much you can figure out by repeatedly hitting pause...

130 mph swing speed? I guess you drive the ball 375 on the fly as well?

    Corey,

130, yes. 375 on the fly, no. Why do you feel it necessary to chime in with a useless comment? Why would I be making this up when I'm looking for help? You can watch my swing. I suggest you spend your time getting out and working on your game rather than wasting your time.

    Hi Trevor!

Wow, this is like watching a long drive guy.  So you said that you've made a few little address adjustments and I think I like them...and since you reported a draw...do you think it's fixed?

One thing that I notice, and launch data would help confirm this, is that it's possible that your angle of attack may be too steep if the ball is towards the middle of your stance.  I can't quite tell in the video.  To steep, or hitting down too much, on a driving swing  creates backspin and side spin.

One of the big differentiators between a long drive player (since that's my only reference with how fast you swing!) and the normal player is not only speed, but angle of attack.  Long drive guys tend have an ascending angle...as if they are hitting up on the ball.  PGA Tour players vary between maybe 2 up and 4 down, and club members tend to be way down.

So the things that you mentioned...standing a little further away, maybe more knee flex, can help shallow the angle.

Good luck and keep us posted!

    Hey Ryan,

Thanks for all of the thoughts. Yes, I am now standing farther away and bending at the knees a tad more. The ball is now going straight or slight draw. I am also working on waiting just a tad bit so my upper body is square at impact rather than way open. I also decided that since so many people think I am a long driver, I'd try out a long drive swing and really take the club way way back, and, I got some crazy results. I was hitting the ball at least 30 yards longer at my local range which I hit at every day.

You might consider the Long Driving Circuit.  Tell Art Sellinger that RC sent ya!

    RC,

My pro said we could probably get the videos tomorrow. Then I'll put them on youtube. Hopefully I'll have the launch data then as well!

    Thanks

Too short of a driver or too upright of a swing would tend to cause a fade. Standing too close to the ball also promotes a fade. Try extending the arms slightly but not to the point where you have to reach or bend over too much to hit the ball. A flatter swing plane promotes a draw. So you're coming straight through and not going outside-in nor going "over the top"? (this is caused by swinging too hard). Did you try hitting with a closed stance and aiming slightly right? This promotes more of an inside-out swing. It is also more suited for a power golf swing. The other possibility is your swing is so fast that you are torqueing the shaft. The reason you probably hit your fairway woods and irons dead straight or draw is because you swing easier. With a driver, people tend to knock the snot out of it.

Ok, thanks for the ideas. My previous driver was 1.5 inches longer, so that may be something I need to look into. Also, today on the range I tried standing farther away, and it was working! Yes my swing is on plane completely. I really don't try to kill the ball each time, I can just swing it quite fast for some reason.

gotta say i think you're in the wrong shaft. I was fitted for a 910d3 8.5 loft not to long ago. I swing 127mph.  The only shaft that wouldn't kick @ the wrong time or torque around too much was a really heavy shaft called the nunchuck. Johnny Vegas uses it. its pricey but worth every 330+ yard drive i hit! talk it over with your pro see what he says.

I know the feeling of people always say your over swinging i very offten get that comment. I had a Golf pro stop playing with me once becouse he said he would hurt his back just watching me swing hahahahaha. I havent had the driver on a launch monitor in a while my last swing speed was a 126=128 with a 6i. i was getting almost 200 yards of carry off the mats with that. Some times a heavy shaft helps i use a 86 gram x-stiff in my D3 when the swing is working im averageing 310+ carry on a smooth tempo'd swing i've carried 360 a few times in the past when im trying to (swing out of the shoes) and thats at about 400ft altitude. where im curringly at.

Even Jim McClean tells in his book "The 3 Scoring Clubs" that the arms don't hang vertical at address but extend a little so that the right arm and shaft are on the same plane.

A certified fitter should know, at the A-3 setting, you have too much loft AND upright and 1.5 face angle closed, and it is going to the right because of it.

First thing to bring launch down is lower loft, try a head with lower loft. Not everyone works that way, I guess!!!

B-2 is a great place to start too.

Going shorter (.5" - 1" shorter) is another option to help with the ball going right with some swings.

What is your grip like. I'm willing to bet your club face is the ever so slightest open at impact. If your Right handed try this just for fun see if this helps alittle. take your address over the ball then re grip the club with the Fundimental (proper grip) and then hit the ball. if your still fading repet takeing the adress this time rotate your grip just ever so slightly back. instead of the thumb being striaght downt the shaft have it just aft of the center shaft line. not much just alittle. and try that. if that fixes produces a straight shot 1-10 to 4-10 times its your swinging to hard. you may not feel you are but your arms and hands cant make that fast of a turn on the ball. I'mm willing to be that might be your problem is over swinging.

How is your left hip on the downswing? I had this exact problem and same club set up and had a little hip slide and would catch fades with them. once i cleared my left hip it was night and day
