  1. Hole in 1: the REAL story He REALLY “called’ his shot”!

I’m a 6.2 index, and I play, weekly (weakly??), with my best bud, Charlie (shoots about 104…but hits some NICE shots, and is a wonderful man). We play a 2-man scramble and shoot about 80 (he feels like he died and went to heaven!) He’s retired from Ohio State faculty, and I am Emeritus Faculty/Mentor at Arizona State (WP Carey school of Business).

We were playing Dobson Ranch, in Tempe AZ, and playing AWFUL! See the scorecard (below): bogey, bogey, double-bogey! So…………………

I stood on the # 4 tee (par 3, 151 yards from the White Tees), and said “Charlie, we suck. Look at our score card (which was in my hand) …so I drew a vertical line on the card (like you put up a fence, in bowling). Then I announced, “we need a hole in 1, to reduce our score…now!” I threw a ball, on the ground (I don’t tee up, on par 3’s), and hit a 2/3 strength 7 wood. Very very high, with backspin.

As I hit it, I said “Charlie, this has a real chance…it’s dead straight…Chalie it’s got a REAL chance”. It went it. Not a cheap-ie…no 40 foot break on the green…straight in…no banking it off the pin. Landed soft, rolled in (about 4 feet). Never even hit the pin.

I asked Charlie if he saw it…he said “sorta” (he’s 83). I said , “well , do you see a ball on the green?” He said “no”. This is my 3ed Hole in1, but the first where I called my shot. In fact, I have never heard of someone calling their hole in 1!!! LOL! Instead of walking up to the green, I yelled at 4 Canadians on # 9 tee. I said “would you attest to my ace”, and they said “yes”. (As we walked, I said to one of them “it’s a black/black Titilest 1”). The Canadian verified that my ball was, in fact, in the hole, and he signed my card…then said, “beer for everyone”. HAHAHA
