just wondering about your thoughts on why professional golfers need there caddie to line them up to hit there shots. obviously not all do this but quite a few do and it just doesnt seem that difficult to pick a spot in front of your ball and line up to it. thoughts?

Astigmatisms could be one example. I have 1 horizontal in 1 eye and 1 vertical in the other, I can't see straight.

For most of us, golf is an individual sport, but clearly it is a team sport.

I think golf should be an individual sport.

The rules allow for it, but I don't like it. Personally, the caddy should be seen, not heard. However, taking full advantage of the rules is not being wimpy, it's being smart and, if it helps you play better, use your caddy to line up.

This is just another example of breaking the spirit of the rules just the same with the bellie putter.  Both are crutches and marginalize the spirit of the game. Both should be band and that goes for the LPGA as well.

Hey Mike, could you define the spirit of the rules?

Obviously the drivers and the balls used today would fit any description of against the spirit of the rules, since both the drivers and the balls made today use to be illegal, adjustable clubs use to be illegal, so that  makes todays fairways and hybrids against the spirit of the rules.

They even changed the rules to be against the spirit of the rules, now if you ground your putter and the ball moves its not a penalty, its just too hard for people today to putt without grounding their putter.......now thats a crutch.

so let me guess they shouldn't read putts either then thats why you have a caddie ..... if most of us had a caddie we would do the same for reinsurance

If you're on the PGA you're probably good enough to line up your shot.  You're also probably good enough to find your own yardage and read your own putts.  Playing golf is a job for these guys.  I ask people in my office to look over presentations and important reports all the time.  If you've got second thoughts, or would like a second set of eyes, then why not ask the Caddie for some help?

I guess in this discussion we are just gonna sit and criticize every rule in the game of golf..........really.  Alright, I am a caddy, and if I sat there the whole time just holding a bag I would be bored.  I love when people ask for advice or help, it makes me feel more useful.  If it's there I say use it.  I might be switching to a long putter, so when I am statistically making more putts then people who find them as "crutches" then joke will be on all of you so.......

Sorry to everyone if I sounded a bit out of line in that last post.  My thoughts just didn't quite come out how I wanted them to.  I just believe that there is nothing wrong with using a tool that you have.  Sorry If I sounded like a jerk, I just got a little carried away.

    Sorry,

this discussion was never ment to slam caddies or the rules of golf, sure you want to use the rules to your advantage, I just simply was wondering why some pros cant line themselves up for the shots. I am a decent amatuer golfer and i can line up just fine, i just cant always hit the shot Im trying to hit

I'm sure they can too, I just don't think there's anything wrong with a second set of eyes.

I actually think its is smart to use the caddie for alignment. It takes the guess work out of alignment if you know your alignment is good all you have to do is swing. Its the same as having a Sharpie line on your ball for putts. Get the line right all you have to do is think about speed.
