Embedded ball free drop or play it as it lies?

    Boy, that is one tough spot.....but to me it looks like it is in the bunker more than in the turf, so I would say "play it as it lies".

    "Embeded Ball"- this can occur in many parts of the golf course... fairway, fairway rough, green, hazard, and in this case, it looks like it's in face of a bunker (yikes). There are certain rules and/or relief for an embedded ball or an abnormal ground conditions, however, I don't believe it applies for "in a hazard/bunkers". If you care to follow up on it, the general rule is listed in the USGA Rule 25-2. If it does not tell you enough, ask the pro shop to help you find a decision about 25-2. You may also write to the USGA and they'll be glad to send you a reply/response.

    To me, that looks more like a "plugged" lie than an embedded ball.  I would say that one is a "play it as it lies" spot.  If it was a little higher and plugged into the grass, then I think you'd be entitled to relief.

    This was actually worse than the picture showed I believe it was actually "in the bunker" but right were the sand and turf meet.The bunker was under cut of the turf.  I did play this shot. Got it out of the trap not on the green. Took boogie. Good news was I didn't hurt my self. Same lie again I'm taking the unplayable penilty the question then is do I drop in the sand or out?

    If the ball is in the bunker, you can take the penalty drop, but within the bunker, no nearer the hole.

    You have two choices for an unplayable lie in a bunker. Drop two club lengths behind plugged lie in line with the flag stick in the bunker or go all the way back to where you last struck the ball that put you in the bunker in the first place and drop a ball there. Both are one stroke penalties.

    Play it as it lies or take a drop with 1 stroke penalty. GMac had the same situation on Sunday at Sea Island

    Under Rule 25-2 you would not get relief from the bunker/hazard, unless you choose to incur a one stroke penalty. But hey, that's golf! I would hit it, even if that means hitting it sideways and back in play.

    In bunker, play as lies.

    In fairway or rough, free drop.

    That appears to be in the bunker.  I'd play it as it lies followed by a lively session of cussing, whining, and pouting.
