Playing Back-To-Back

  1. It's not every weekend that I play back-to-back rounds (Sat/Sun). I'd say it only happens a few times a year... and I started to think back on if playing these back-to-back rounds either helped or hurt the latter round.

I have a back-to-back planned for this weekend, with Sunday's course being the original plan, as the only round for the weekend; however, a buddy reached out and now I'm set for Saturday and Sunday. The only reason why this has me thinking, is because Sunday's course is the one I'm REALLY looking forward to, and one I've been waiting to play.

Since the latter is the more important round, it had me thinking I'll go into Saturday as more of a practice round, looking to play shots that I'll need for the next day. If the days were switched, I'd be completely focused on Saturday and thinking of Sunday as more of a regular casual round.

Thinking back, playing back-to-back has probably helped more than it has hurt the latter round. I try to carry thoughts/feels to into the next day, and I'll have a pretty good idea on what shots are working when the time counts. The only times it may have had a negative impact, are those 2nd rounds at a stay/play w/ your buddies, when the nights are longer than normal... and "where the beer flows like wine".

    Your thoughts?

...If I could play at least every other day, I'd be better. As little time to play as I get, I would just try to enjoy both. But knowing I'll be dialed in better for my short game on Sunday. Not that I'm successful, but pressure builds tension, and tension tightens muscles. Never works to put pressure on any one shot.

I enjoy back to backs think it helps me more than hurt me.
  4. Having a round to prepare has to be a good thing in my opinion. You'll be able to see your strengths and weaknesses. If your a fairly good player that chooses their shot shape it might be worth taking a strokesaver for the Sunday course and see if you can pull off certain shot you'll need.

Main thing though just have fun, that's the main reason your doing this remember

Back to back or 18/18 for Saturday and Sunday is fun. Enjoy your time and play well.

I am lucky enough to play every Saturday/Sunday starting about in April and at least going through November. Typically, the Saturday round is with my group, and Sunday is a practice round first thing in the morning. It is not unusual that on three day weekends, I play all 3 days. The more I play rounds, the better my feel and confidence is. If I have a bad round, even though I am anxious to "erase" it through playing a good round, it helps me to just put the clubs down for a few days, clear the mind, and then go back after it with a new outlook the following weekend. Personally, I just like being on the course, challenging myself to hit more fairways, hit more greens in regulation, recover from errant shots, get up and down for par, and all the things you have to believe you can do and execute to post a good score.

I usually play four days in a row (M-Th) every week I can, with an occasional Friday round thrown in as well. It's easy to do when you're retired. I vary courses and start times, so I'm not relying on the same situations every day. That way I can work on keeping my base game while developing those areas that need additional work to lower my scores.

Back in my working days it was Sat/Sun golf but since I've been retired it's 3 days a week, Mon/Wed/Fri. Also now that I'm older I need the day off in between and no longer play on weekends.

Robert, I find it does get harder as I get older. I generally play with my senior men's group on Mon, Wed, and Fri and occasionally on Saturday in a blitz, where the rewards are more substantial. Will be meeting a buddy from the buckeye state on Tuesday at the TPC - Myrtle Beach, in Murrells Inlet that will be a back to back to back, weather permiting. I have not played in almost a week due to the course being closed due to rainouts and the course being flooded.

Have signed up to played in a men's invitational at Berkeley Country Club labor day weekend which will be a three day tournament and this should be an experience. Moving back to the regular tees. I normally only play in senior events, but thought I would at least try one more time. Have been working on mid iron shots with my coach. Senior events are normally two day events. FootJoy and Titleist are providing the tee gifts: 4 packages - SM7 Vokey wedge; golf bag; 2 dz Prov golf balls/2 FJ gloves; pair ProSLs. They will also be having a senior invitational later in the fall which I plan on playing in. They have great tournaments.
  10. I enjoy playing back to back. It give you more time to fix what you are doing wrong and more time on greens. I know that my short game needs a lot of work, so the more I play the better it typically gets. Play each round and don't think ahead to the next round. You don't want to carry over any bad swings.

Truthfully never gave it any thought until now, but when I have played back to back I don't think it had an effect on me much on day 2 good or bad. Playing 3 straight days does, did that twice & the 3rd day each time was terrible. I just enjoyed the fact I was able to play twice that weekend. Enjoy your rounds.....

Back to back is fun. I also like to occasionally play 36 at two different tracks on the same day.
