  1. Since we all seemed to get a good laugh out of the Slow Play Quotes that I can safely say reflect the the thoughts and feelings of pretty much all of us, lets touch on some of the things that make these guys slow to start with. For those of us that play public my biggest beef are the ones that have no clue as to where to leave their bags from green to tee. They could shave 10 minutes off a round by not always walking in the wrong direction on every hole. Always leaving bags in the front of the green when the next tee is out the back! Some thoughts?

How about a 4some and none are ready to go on every shot. They have to figure out distance and club, and not at the same time oh no they do this after their buddy hits. It's the new "it's all about me" society we live in.

There are those types who are clueless that they are holding up play. And when I ask them to "Please pick up your pace of play, you now have 3 holes open in front of you" [who started right in front of them on the first tee], at least one will complain to his/her buddies that he paid his fee, just like I did. It usually gets them going, though.

Then there are those who screw around and don't care that they are holding up the rest of the golf course. They're the ones I see waving the drink cart from 2 fairways over, then spending 5 minutes flirting with the cart girl, while we're waiting on the tee behind them.

And it's not just public courses that suffer from slow play. I belong to a private club and we have guys who are slugs on the course. They know who they are, too, but you're not going to rush them for nothin.

There's one guy at our place, who plays in our Men's Day 9 hole evening league. He's the one described above flirting with the cart girl. Big, loud guy that has to let everyone know he's around and no one! no one! is going to tell him he needs to pick up the pace. As my teams A player, I had to play him every year. He got a stroke per hole from me and his antics got old, so that while he's flirting with the cart girl, or whatever nonsense he was doing, I walked ahead and played my shot, then waited at the green. The last 3 years I played in the league he got a sub the week he had to play me. I didn't enjoy playing with him any more than he didn't enjoy playing me. The leagues 3 hour nine hole rounds was one of the major reasons why the league to dropped from 16 to 11 teams this past year.
  4. A couple times last season when behind a slow group (not a slow day overall, but a slow group), what I noticed was a lot of chit chat on the tee box. We'd be on the green, and we would take less time putting than the group in front teeing off. When we asked the marshall to monitor and help them along, we'd hear back that they "are under the 4.5hr pace of play" ... when a 3.5-4hr round is possible, that's brutal to hear. Ah...muni's.

Makes me think a shot clock would be great way to get the rhythm going...but would hate the aesthetic.

I live in Dayton Ohio and play mostly public courses.
My issue here is when the group in front is slow for whatever reason and the group behind is hitting into us.
Ex. Par four group in front is not off the green we're in the fairway and the group behind is hitting away. .
    Happens all the time!

The correct golf course etiquette was something, I learned as a junior.

Golf clubs in front of a green no where near the next tee was always a big no no.

Playing a chip shot near the green but not taking your putter with you for the next shot was a big no no.

A phone, what was that back in the old days. Lol
I’ve see a few guys out on the course stop play to take calls.

Here at PGA GC, the rangers have the tee sheet with them. Tee times are at 9 minute intervals on all 3 courses. You are expected to complete your round in not more than 4 hours. I've heard the ranger tell a group that they were 4 minutes behind!! I've even seen a case where a group was 2 holes behind and the ranger made them skip a hole to catch up. There's no messing around with slow play here. I cut my teeth playing muni's and daily fees, so I know what a lot of you are having to put up with. They don't really enforce things the way they should.

I hate the group of carts that go from ball to ball (regardless if they are 5 yards apart). I get that you are sometimes or always with your pals and this is your time to chat and have fun... but... this is NOT your personal country club golf course and the rest of us also want to play and enjoy. To me the most important things to do are 1) Be self aware, 2) Respect the game, your fellow players and the golf course, 3) Remember that you are NOT the only one playing at the course. Maybe its the way I was brought up or I’m getting older and becoming that guy (Get off my lawn and turn down that loud music!). All players complain about this stuff but for some reason the problems still persist.

Also - Stop being that guy that takes the game so seriously that you are not fun to be around. I get that you never ever play like this and that you usually shoot in the low 70’s. I don’t want to hear about every bad shot you hit. Not from the the same fairway or from the one across the way. Stop throwing tantrums and throwing stuff all over the course, including the flag.

All this extra nonsense doesn’t improve your game and it makes my round last much longer than it has to. I love being on the course but not your time table.
