Rating your performance

  1. For the past several years, one of my goals is to play an 18 hole round without a bogey. I haven’t accomplished this, even though I have 12 rounds under par this year. Shot -3 today with a bogey and went home disappointed *again*.

I don’t measure myself by score, but rather by the number of mistakes, their severity, and whether they are physical or mental. My questions for the group are, would you prefer to shoot under with a bogey or even par with no bogies? And how do you rate your performance after a round?

That's an easy one; under par with a bogie every time.I keep track of GIR,and putts. That tells me what i need to work on.

That's a good question Dan. I really can't imagine doing either one. But I would choose under par any day.

Dude, if you’re playing for score the only thing that matters is that 72 is lower than 73. Par is just an arbitrary number out there. Let’s take say Oakmonts 8th hole, long par 3 that can play 300+ yards from the back tee.

You make a 3 there on a par 3, how do you feel?

Do you have the same feeling if you make a 4?

If you play a par 4 on a different course that’s 300 yards, and make a 3, how do you feel about that?

They all add up the same man! Be hyped on your under par scores and enjoy the walk my friend!

I myself, measure self against other golfers according to height! LOL
  5. I Sorry, my intent wasn’t to imply I would prefer to shoot even par without a bogey vs under with a bogey every time, I just want to achieve a bogey-free round at least once. It’s a goal.
  6. Sorry, my intent wasn’t to imply I would prefer to shoot even par without a bogey vs under with a bogey every time, I just want to achieve a bogey-free round at least once in my life. It’s a goal that I have never been able to achieve. Basically, I’d like to walk off the course thinking I didn’t make a mistake bad enough to cost me a bogey. After 45 years of playing, this would feel like a greater accomplishment than simply shooting a few shots under my handicap every now & then.

If you finish with 17 pars and a double-bogey have you accomplished your goal? j/k

    Dan,
I measure my round(s) on GIR, FW & Putts and Up/Dns as they are a better reflection of my score and how I was playing that day. I have never shot under par but if I shoot a good score with a Triple bogey I am pleased but I look at my GIR's & FW's & Putts and think this could have been so much better. Each hole has the opportunity to gain or lose strokes & if I win most of those battles by not losing strokes then I am happy despite my score.

I understand what you are saying, it's you against the course and that is your challenge in beating the course. I think if that drives you then do it. We all motivate differently. My goal is to shoot even par one day, but if I have a bogey or a double in that round I will still tell everyone I shot even par. If I don't then we'll talk about the bogeys or doubles I had. Lol!!

I think it's a great question and motivation tool,.
Good Luck & hope you get it done.

I would say that score is a metric. So are GIR, fairways hit and putts. There's 18 holes and shooting a bogey free round is a nice accomplishment. A task you can aspire to and hopefully one day succeed! Enjoy the whole round and don't feel bummed by one hole. Golf is a game you should have fun with by the end of the day.

Good luck and hope you achieve your goal!

I like the way you think. It's a game against yourself. I can remember many years ago when the gold was to not lose a ball. Then break 90, 80, par and so on. Bogey free is a tall task but an achievable goal. It is one of my goals also.

I can understand that feeling of wanting to avoid the mistakes. We all have that post round reflection of "if only I didn't mess that one (or 2, 3....) hole up!". I have been under par but a bogey-free round isn't something I have done for a full 18. I would always prefer the lower score vs a bogey-free round, but it is a great goal and accomplishment. Some day.

Last week on the PGA Tour, the winner J.T. Poston did not make a single bogey in all 4 rounds. That's unbelievable!
I know he's a professional golfer but that is still unbelievable.

Like others, a round under par is more meaningful than an even par round with no bogies.

As for rating my performance, these days I tend not to obsess over "missed opportunities". As I tell my two sons, golf is hard and we're not perfect. I try on every shot, even those missed two footers - that's golf.

Oh, wow, this story goes back some 17 years ago when I asked a guy at the club house of what he shot that day and he replied, "67, bogey free." He didn't look too happy about it but I was able to say to him, "Nice round!" There wasn't any follow up from that conversation, and just like that, it ended. I guess I was stunned by his accomplishment. My mouth was probably still on the floor when he left. ...I just didn't expect the 67 let alone the bogey free.

Anyway, I'm not sure where I was going with that, but it struck me like it just happened a week ago.

For myself, I don't consider me as a good golfer and I try not to delay any group behind although I occasionally break 80 as for a back ground in a conversation like this one we're in, so I could only dream of a bogey free round, and I'd be ecstatic with anything under par for sure, and I don't mean to cheapen the thread, but I would take either one of the two right now.

Yes, but not always and more times not, I also log FIR, GIR, and putts, but only to see where I need work. However, I measure my day's round from my last lowest score from the same course and tees I played in. Ultimately, I do glance at my month by month GHIN index to see where I'm at.
  18. My goal for a round is 6 FIR, 6 GIR, and 6 Pars. I also track putts and consider 34 to be a good round for me.

Great days are those which I do better than goals in all categories (duh!), but most days there's a category that's short of goal and that tells me what to work on between rounds.

    Happy grinding!
