Interesting question. I imagine that being properly fit is the best way to get the best results, however this past offseason i was fit properly into a driver setup. It was a significant change and really benefited my driving speed, distance and accuracy. I was so happy with they way it performed that I went ahead and bought the same shaft for my 3 wood.(slightly heavier though)

I can absolutely say without a doubt i hit my 3 wood way better now, i used to hit it only off a tee and it was not a shot i was very confident over. So, to answer your question, the same shaft as my driver fitting worked very well for me!

My fitter says to always stick with the same shafts if you are able to throughout your woods for consistency.

Fitting would always be ideal but if you didn't go that route, probably would be my next choice, to match up shafts. If nothing else, you will probably get the most consistent feel between the clubs with similar weight and flex of like shafts. I have Tensei Blue in my driver, 3 wood, and both hybrids.

At 2 TPI driver fittings, did fairways as well, and neither time was the shaft the same the driver.

I feel redeemed, that I'm not as stupid as I look. I have the same shaft in my TS2 driver, TS2 3wood, and hybrid. Liked it and it performed well in one, so I put it in the others too, and I do like the consistent feel and performance.

I too have the same shafts in my driver and 3wood, I had a different shaft in the 3wood originally and then bought the same as my driver. after trying the same shaft as my driver I am loving how well my 3 wood is preforming.

i have basically the same shaft in my driver and 3 wood; the driver is 73 grams the 3 wood 82. The only other difference is that I have the 3 wood set 1 degree flat.

I was fit for and play the following:
915D3, Mitsubishi Bluewboard 60 stiff, A1 setting.
915F, Aldila Rogue Silver 70 stiff, C1 setting.
915H, Aldila Rogue Black 85 stiff, B1 setting.

Playing in an outing for work on the road last year, the airline lost my clubs. Rentals were 917D2, 917F, 917H all with Blueboard shaft. I hooked the heck out of the F and H. Driver was fine. I was surprised there was such a difference. In the past I've hit the same shafts in fairways.

Yes, although mine is the older 917 driver and 3 wood, when I got fitted for them, the fitter arrived at the same brand shaft and flex for both driver and 3 wood for me ...and I'm only leaning to that answer by my own experience. If you go and get fitted, it would be more validated.

That is the main reason I go to a Titleist Certified fitter and preferably a Product Specialist. Ensuring that I get the right length and weight for my driver and three fairway. Which have differed in each fitting, even though the shafts may be the same brand. I hit a lot of different shafts. This is the main reason I go to fittings on turf, so I can get the feel off the tee and turf with the fairway and can see the true flight. Of course we must do what is best for each of us. .

While it may be right for some, it definitely was not the same shaft for me in my fittings. HZRDUS Smoke in my TS2 driver and Tensei Blue in my TS2 16.5.

I can imagine it's better to get fit for the best results but if you can't get one then I reckon it would be a safe bet going with the same shaft in a fairway version.

You buying online or going to a store? Maybe try the fairway off the tee and of the deck just to get a feel for it.

I love this thread, very interesting stuff on how its worked for some but not everyone.

The only time I had similar shafts in my fairway and driver was when I was a high handicapper. And by similar, I mean same shaft but different weights.

They are different clubs and you will likely use them in different ways and have different swings and transitions with them.

Therefore, different shafts will likely be better.

BUT, there are certainly exceptions to that.

I love the shaft I have in my old 915 fairway. I did try the driver shaft once (actually, I bought it on the rec of the fitter) and I hated it. I still have it collecting dust. I can hit it ok, but there are much better shafts for me.
