  1. Hey tt,

Just writing here to see what you guys do in the off season for golf. As the weather is going to start getting colder, what do you guys do to improve your golf game?

Moved to San Diego so I wouldn't have an off-season. Golf all year round these days. If I was to have an extended break, range of motion exercises would be my priority. That and head south as much as possible...

During the winters that I don't head south I spend a lot of time on fitness. I work on my fitness during the golf season also, but sitting all winter and doing nothing is not an option. When it warms up enough to get back out and start practicing again I'm physically ready.
  4. I'm in the same boat. Living in Ohio I know I'm approaching my last few rounds of the year. I have 11ft ceilings in the basement and have been shopping around for a good quality net... I also hope to build some resemblance of a 4x8ft putting surface... Hopefully this will allow me to go downstairs and hit a few shots a few days a week till the season starts back up again in roughly April.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone out there recommends one net over another?
  5. I putt alot in my place. I make little games up with my wife.
also try to go to the simulator from time to time but the one near me just shutdown.
  6. Living in So.Carolina I get to play pretty much all year. During our "winter" it does get colder so you have to figure that the ball doesn't fly as far so you get to work on taking an extra club but only using a half swing. Also, if the course has bermuda grass (which goes dormant in cold weather) you get to work on your contact which will help during the regular season. The range that I go to is also open all year, so unless there is the rare snow, I can do a bunch of range time.

Anytime there's a down time for golf, it's a great time to test and/or change equipment, also a good time see the pro for a lesson or tune up. Other than that, it's also a great time to visit places closer to the equator and play some golf.

Chip and putt when weather is warm enough to do so (40+ degrees). Maybe hit a few range days or the course when it's a warm 50 degree day. But I always at least go chip & putt if I go to the course....

So basically Dec-Feb it's hit or miss on getting a day to do that around my parts. But by March it's time to play again.

November can still have a good number of days that I can play, chip or hit as well.

Living in Portland Oregon we can pretty much play most of the year, that is if you like playing in the wind, rain and mud. The course down the street from work has heated tee's so i pretty much go to the range all year and work with the instructor. I have an indoor putting mat that I also like to work on.

Here in S. Jersey, we layer up and play all winter. Just pray for No snow!! It's a different game in the winter though. Frozen greens most of the time. Lots of bump and runs. Play it short. Working at the course is a little different as well. Lots of tree work. Sand trap work. And drainage issues are worked on. But there really isn't any "off season"
    Play Well,

My off season here in San Diego is taking off my vest or sweater by the 4th hole!

Being a few miles north of Boston, winter comes quick. I'll play the weekend after Thanksgiving and that's pretty much it.In terms of staying in shape, after 30 years at a desk and in the car (advertising sales), I work at plumbing supply house now. I'm running up and down stairs and lifting cast iron pipe and assorted plumbing/heating fixtures.I'm probably in the best shape I've been in years.I do like to take walks in the winter.

Here in LI as long as it is north of 40 with no wind we play thru the winter and ground not frozen.

In NC we can play all year but...winter can get "tough". Shorter days, highs in the upper 30's-low 40's, winds, and wet grounds can affect your experience. It's so weather-dependent. When that nice day hits you've got to get out and lower your expectations score-wise but still have fun. I've got a 55 month streak of playing at least once per month but my play is limited during the colder months.
Moved here from Northern New York. November play was iffy and courses rarely opened before early April. Ugh...

I probably played my last round of the 2019 season this past Wednesday. It was a gorgeous day in the upper 60's. This morning a balmy 61*F and light rain as I went to the gym. By noon is was 42*F. We're expecting snow over the weekend. Our club is scheduled to be open through Nov 3, but if the weather doesn't cooperate there won't be many folks out there.

Our club clears out the bag racks and sets up a net with room for two to hit side by side. Also a simulator in the one station. I'll hit balls on Men's Day and have a couple barley pops with the guys. Putt inside the office on the indoor/outdoor carpeting. Gym work focuses on flexibility, endurance and strength training taught to me by a physical therapist who has worked a lot with golfers. The goal is not to gain the winter weight and go into the spring feeling strong.

Beginning in May my son in law is scheduled to report to Miramar, where they'll likely be for the next 3 years, possibly 5. A winter golf visit to the San Diego area will be an annual event with them there.

I go to an indoor golf sim with trackman. I'm in much need of a tuneup over the winter for my full swing.

Headed to Myrtle Beach next week for 8 days of golf every day. Hopefully then coming back and getting in many more rounds before it gets too cold and that white crap starts coming out of they sky.

Otherwise.......... Winter..........Deep depression, the occasional indoor golf at a couple of local places, and 18 hours a day of The Golf Channel, crying and weeping until Spring. I HATE WINTER! When I grow up I want to be just like you guys living in year round climates.

Off season in North Carolina is rarely more than a week at a time. The course shuts down when it snows, but opens up again after it melts. We don't get a lot of sub freezing weather, so it is just layer up and play, get a lot more bounce and roll.
