I’ll go first – I was introduced to the game by my father, who used to take me to our local driving range in MN. From there, I told him that if he bought me some cool and stylish golf outfits, I’d take up the game.

I think if you asked him if those outfits were well worth the money, he’d say yes. :)

My father. When I was about 4-5yo we would walk the course in the military base we lived on. He cut an old diver, 5 iron, 9 iron and putter for me. I was allowed to hit it one time for each time he hit it. Even though I am a true lefty I still play right handed. Wow that was over 50 years ago. Thanks for the memories dad.

My Mom remarried a good man, he was a PGA Pro who played golf for a living and taught later. He tried to get me into golf but I didn't want anything to do with golf. Years later, my brother came to visit me. He had one of our step dad's retired Titleist set. I thought we were going fishing so I asked how we were going to catch fish with those!

Long story short, out of a jumbo bucket of balls at the range, one flew out in the direction I was aimed at with the four iron I had on my hand and I turned to my brother and said; "That one went out to 175 mark, did you see?!?!" He said, "No."

Although my dad gets an honorable mention it was really my grandfather when I was around 10. I often reflect on those summer weekday rounds, loading up his pull cart and golfsmith clubs that he would assemble himself... I can almost smell it. I miss you Pops!

Caddied at age 13. on Mondays when the club was closed, they let the caddies play. A retired club pro who lived down the street from us got wind that I was playing on Mondays and was nice enough to give me a 3 & 5 wood and 3-5-7-9 irons and old blade putter that he had in his garage. The rest is history.

Grandfather got me started in 1956 at the age of 9 hitting balls back and forth in his front yard using a cut down hickory shaft 9 iron.

When I was 6 years old my parents became members of the local country club. The pro gave me a old 3 wood that he cut down and replaced the grip. I beat that club to death. I have been playing about 65 years now and had 3 hole in ones. Two usingTitleist tour and the most recent using a Pro V 1x.

When I was 16 an older man who live across the street knew I played baseball and asked if I ever tried golf. I told him I hit a few balls with an old 7 iron that my Dad had in the cellar, but had never been to a golf course, and I didn't have a set of clubs.
Sure enough, the next Saturday morning,we go into his garage. He grabs a 3-5-7-9 iron, a putter and a 3wood and throws them in an old bag. He took me to a 9 hole course north of Boston for my first round.I don't remember the score, but I do remember hitting a couple solid irons, and that was it. I was in! I picked up the game fairly quickly because I made my HS team and then my college team.

I'll never forget him taking the time and effort to introduce me to the game.......and he gave me the clubs!
  11. Classic example of a guy passing the game onto the next generation. Awesome story.

Best friend growing up and my grandfather who gifted me a hand-me-down set of irons. Played often at a local country track. Not much to look at these days but it was fun back in the day.

a guy at my work introduced me to the game. i was going thru some tough times and he said why don’t give golf a try, so we went and played a couple of rounds and had a lot of fun. every now and then i have to retire briefly, lol, though due to unhappy scoring :)
  17. I looked at the photo and said to myself , that looks like Palm Springs and I was right.
  18. My dad played so both my brother and I did also with a mixed mash wooden shafted clubs. My dad played up until he died last year at the young age of 87. My brother still has the wood shaft putt.

I used to ride on the back of the cart when my dad played, helping to keep score, and being his go'fer. By my teens he'd occasionally take me to the range with him. Some of my friends invited me to go with them to play, from that point I was hooked.

That was nearly 30 years ago now. I shoot a little better scores these days and recently passed my dad's last set of clubs before he passed to my oldest son. I hope that my son will pass on the game to his kid(s) if he ever has the chance.

My father intorduced me to this great game at the age of 4. He let me come with him and his friends on Sunday's to "caddy" for them. It was his eay to introduce me to the proper ettiquitte of the game before I began playing. He said that a good foundation will take you long way inthe game regardless of how good you become. He taught me where to stand, when to be quiet, how to replace divots, fix ball marks, rake traps etc.. After a summer of that, I began playing the follwing summer and have never looked back. I'm now 44 years old and have two sons of my own. They have learned the game the same way that I have.

My parents never played, my grandparents (who also never played) gave me my first set of clubs. I grew up playing with my brothers and friends which led to caddying at the club where I am now a member.

I introduced my sons as soon as they could walk and they remain my favorite partners to this day!

Instead of playing miniature golf one day in the summer when staying with my grandparents, there was also a driving range at the facility and my grandfather suggested we hit a bucket of balls afterwards. I was six, and 45 years later, I am still hooked.
  24. Like a lot of the comments in this thread, it was my dad who first taught me to play golf. He would take me to the course and once out of sight of the clubhouse, would let me hit a few shots. This was interesting because I am right handed and he was left handed. I was able to hit the ball fairly well left handed. One year for Christmas, my mom bought a set of clubs for herself and my dad. Her set was right handed which better suited my handedness. I started setting up a "golf course" around our yard and played the different holes with her clubs and wiffle balls. That was about 60 years ago and I still am learning how to play and love the game. As they say, "Even a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work!"

When I was 9 in 1964 we kept hearing about a golfer who had an army and just won the Masters. None of us could figure that out. So of course, The King, Arnold Palmer had Arnie´s Army. My two buddies and I grabbed our father´s clubs and started playing at the local 9 hole course. We all crouched over to copy his putting style. So full circle, when Arnie was honored at the USGA Museum in 2008 I was able to tell him that story. He chuckled and signed an autograph. The man just made everyone feel like his best friend.
    Much love Arnie!

My dad. I was blessed to create a bunch of amazing memories with him. From playing everyday rounds on our home course to making trips to the likes of Pinehurst.

He taught me so many life lessons on the course while we played. Goodness I miss those days.

But I take him everywhere I play. The last thing he told me before he passed was “I’ll meet you in the first tee”. I have that on my Prov1x golf balls. I went to Scotland a few years ago and played the Old Course, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Kingabarns and a few others and I could feel him with me on every shot.

Sorry for the ramble, but this game has a way of stirring up a lot of emotion in me, particularly when I think of my dad.

Such a neat way to customize your golf balls and a great reminder every time you tee it up!
