I always putt to a quarter on the carpet from various distances.. I also chip Titleist balls of course, into a chair from 8 feet.. They come back right at your feet. You definately don't want to blade one in the house. It keeps the muscle memory on target.
One tip...don't look out the window......too depressing!

They make these sponge golf balls with a little metal weight inside (so that you get a little feel) and I have used them to hit balls from my living room to the front door. Works pretty well and so far just bounces off the small glass pane and no breakage.

During the winter most of the members at my club play cards, those of us who are getting the itch to play will set up a 18 hole putting course through the clubhouse. It goes down the hallways, down the stairs, all over the place. Some of these games get pretty intense and are really fun. Our club is carpeted with really short carpet so it is pretty good practice. Unfortunately, I don't have an area like that at home. I should invest in a putting matt or something. I keep telling myself the snow has to melt soon but as soon as I think that, it snows some more.

Sounds like fun. We got snow again also. When I practice at home, I try not to look out the window. Most putting mats are too darn small. I have a piece of green carpet from Home Depot about 8x10. Roll it up and lay it out in the garage. I even cut a 4 inch circle in it.
I'm seriously thinking about putting a permanent one in the garage similar to the ones at the big golf stores. It would be poured with cups with a nice golf mural as a background, and, still fit the wifes Mini Cooper. Like to take a picture of her face when the garage door opens the first time....lol

One thing I do is regrip my clubs with this down time. Just ordered a regriping station. Before I would place a piece of tape on the shaft to use as an alignment guide for the new grip but there is still some doubt in my mind that my grips were not square with the club face. The regriping station should take the square alignment quesion out of mind. Speaking of grips, what do you like ?

I heard 49 states currently have snow! I guess there are a lot of us that are itching to get out and play.

Florida is the only snow free state. Even Hawaii has snow (They have mountains high enough to have snow year around).

I have a great indoor golf training center just down the road. It has hitting bays with video analysis, putting green, chipping area, and a simulator. Only problem is it can be over crowded with detoxing golf addicts this time of year. Many of these facilities are springing up around the country, double check your local area.
As far as drills go, I had a pro tell me the other day about a great winter putting drill. He has just worked out a new pre-shot routine for his putting stroke, along the lines of his full swing routine, and has committed to performing the routine before every putt this winter. Imagine the discipline it would take to perform a full pre-shot routine before every carpet putt you make this off season.

I live in Texas, so I really can't help you with that problem.
