My tenth year working with the Pro/Am Jam, now known as the JAM for Denny Hamlin, NASCAR driver and Mark Bryan, lead guitarist for Hootie and the Blowfish and every year offers a new surprise for me. As I have gotten older and have volunteered for every event that has come thru Charleston (PGA, Sr PGA, LPGA, Nationwide, Amateur) I have now my time to this one charity. I work on a par three to verify a hole in one. This year they were offering a PHAT Scooter for a hole in one. The pin placement made it highly improbable that one would be given away with the condition of the greens. Hard and fast. Think the closest to the pin was about 20 feet. Cool looking Scooter, the participants having a blast testing them all around the hole. Have met a lot of cool people of the years and seem to see a few that always show up. Debbie Dunning, "Tool Time” girl Heidi Keppert in the ABC sitcom “Home Improvement”. For fans of the Washington hogs, Joe Jacoby spent some time talking with us about football and the current state of the team. Dang nice guy. He said all the hogs are still alive. But this year, could not believe my eyes when out of his cart popped Smokey Robinson of the Miracles. Such an icon in music. So approachable and such a friendly smile. Had to thank him for all the great music that he gave us. Asked if I would like a picture and of course, the star struck fan I am, of course I said yes. The benefit of working the event, the smiles of the participants faces and most do thank us volunteers for helping out, and some remember us from the previous year. One celebrity even asked me to putt for him because he was horrible. Cold turkey, no warm up, I missed a thirty foot putt, dead on line, by six inches. Felt bad. Easy tap in for a par. My partner and I work this hole every year and will until they spread my ashes in East Tennessee. Pictures: #1 - Debbie Dunning, #2 - Smokey Robinson, #3 - PHAT Scooters, #4 - The substitute putter.
