Ten Most Expensive Courses in The US?

    I was reading this article this morning. I have been fortunate to have played four on the list. Personally I prefer to play the old school courses when I can find them, those built in the 20's and 30's and that are not walking courses only. I chose Spyglass over Pebble Beach based on recommendations by the pros in this area. Also only paid $110 when I played SG. Played Pinehurst #2 and TPC Sawgrass (Players Stadium) at Team Titleist Invitationals. Have played the Ocean Course at Kiawah many times and the most I ever paid was $50 and that was one time. I normally played there for free because I worked the tour events as a volunteer and that was one of our perks and the course superintendent was a friend. He is not longer there. Bummer. Playing one of these courses can bust your golf budget while on vacation.

    Will be four also after the August TTI at Whistling Strait. Pinehurst #2, Kiawah Ocean, and Pebble Beach are my other three. I picked those for historic golf reasons, not price. The only other ones on the list I would want to add are Spyglass and TPC Stadium. Sadly missed out on the TTI that year. Might be in the area for a work conference in May 2020 so possibly will get it off the bucket list.

    Similar to courses from the 20's and 30's on business trips, I've tried to find Donald Ross courses when there is one in the area. While Pinehurst #2 and French Lick are on the most expensive list, there are other courses much more reasonable. While he designed over 400, there are some that have been closed and others threatened due to development pressures and/or lack of play.

    One not listed is Great Southern Golf Club in Biloxi, MS. Katrina essentially wiped out the course and it was threatened with closing (the club house was a single-wide until a new one was built). The front nine had not updated the Ross greens since it was a PGA stopping point in the 30's and 40's. They were all postage stamp shape and not very large. Hitting/holding was a challenge. By today's standards, it is short, but also part of the charm.

    Pebble, Spyglass and Shadow Creek.

    I do get to play Spyglass for $235 and I can bring 3 friends for the same price.

    Okay but just to let you know ahead of time, I'm not a great golfer but I have lots of fun, play fast and never get mad. Noel is also supposed to come up to play Spyglass sometime.
    You would also have to drink some of my homemade Limoncello.

    I'm sorry but my definition of a "great golfer" IS someone who plays fast and never gets mad so you might have to re-categorize yourself. I too have my share of days when i can't make a par to save my life. I'm sure we would have a great time out there.

    Whistling Straits:The Straits - multiple times (I often get discounts for volunteering at Kohler golf events), As well the other 3 courses there. Pinehurst #2 as well as 1, 3, 4, and 9. Kiawah Island - these last 2 in association with Titleist events. I have a picture on the 18th green at Pebble but played no closer than Pacific Grove (back nine is one of the best links for the $).

    Only Pebble and Shadow for me.. Shadow takes the cake because of the hotel, limo ride and no one on the course. You can eat a steak off the fairways!

    3 for me. Pebble Beach, Spyglass and Whistling Straits. BTW, never paid the list price at Spyglass. I have a few friends who have a Duke's Card which gives discounts at some of the Pebble Beach courses. In addition, in the beginning of the calendar year, there was an offer of $75 gift card for tee times made at Spyglass and Spanish Bay; this year they did not have that offer. Hopefully, it comes back.

    Wear light clothes and plan on drinking lots and lots and lots of water. Hottest month of the year down this way. Heat index this week reaching 110*. Hope you got a morning tee time. Caddies are required before noon. Great course, links style, have played it many times, one of my favorites. If you plan on walking take an umbrella (for shade, not a lot of trees on the course).

    It is not one of the easiest courses. If the wind is blowing you could be hitting into two to three club winds. Again links style course.

    7296 from the Tournament tees. Slope 152
    6552 from the Championship tees. Slope 142
    6031 from the Regular tees. Slope 134
    5327 from the Forward tees. Slope 133

    Alligators are faster than you are and there a plenty of them on Kiawah.........last but least of all.....have fun because it is a beautiful course along the Atlantic Ocean......they have some really cool Pom Pom head covers in the Pro Shop...

    Thanks Chuck! We have a tee time just before 9am and play a lot of golf in the heat, so we'll be downing water! We're excited to golf in the area. Will be the second time I've played in South Carolina, went to Palmetto Bluff two years ago and stayed at the Montage so we were able to get on May River. We have a house in Isle of Palms near you this time, are the courses at Wild Dunes worth playing while we are there as well?

    I’ve played Whistling Straits last year and this year and Pinehurst #2 two years ago. I haven’t done TPC nor Kiawah which are both close by to me. Hopefully next year or a TT event.

    Pebble, Spyglass, and Shadow Creek. it's amazing how the birds at Shadow Creek believed that they're not in a desert ;)
