I just put a new set of MB irons in play this spring with my set composition being 4-P 2* flat and 1* strong (46* PW).  I'm also at the point where I desperately need to replace my wedges and since I'm no longer carrying a 3 iron or equivalent hybrid, I'm going to go to a 3 wedge system.  Loft wise I'm going to go 50, 54, 58 with KBS Tour shafts to go along with my irons, but I'm not sure which grind profile to get since I play primarily on three courses.  One course which I play on frequently has soft fairways and relatively soft greens that play on the quick side, but the bunkers have fairly heavy sand that is normally pretty tightly packed because of how the course holds water.  The second course typically has firm fast fairways and greens with sand that is pretty light and loose.  The third course is again fairly firm and fast as for the greens and fairways, but the sand is a little heavier, but still looser.

My stock swing has a moderate angle of attack and I will steepen or shallow the swing as needed to adjust for sand conditions.  Generally I use my 9, P, and 52* wedge for low bump and run shots from about 40 yards in and I will use my 58* wedge with a fairly stock swing for an 80-85 yard shot.  For longer greenside bunker shots I will use my 52* wedge laid open a bit and for short greenside bunker shots I will generally use my 58* wedge laid wide open.  The only major adjustment to this sand strategy is when I'm playing on my home course which has the heavier tighter packed sand.  In those bunkers it's still the 52* for longer shots and the 58* for shorter shots, but I will not open the club up much if at all and will come in with a steeper attack and will take less sand.

Given this information, what grind or combination of grinds would be best suited to my playing conditions?  Up to this point in my golfing life, I've played lowish bounce angles and have done pretty well with them aside from them digging a bit on my home course with the soft turf conditions.

    Hi Marc,

    Great question.

It sounds like you have already done quite a bit of work in determining which combination is best for you.  It sounds like the majority of your golf is played on firmer conditions. It also sounds like the lower bounce options you currently play have worked fairly well, with the exception of some "digging".  You sound like an individual who would benefit from medium bounce wedges, giving you the versatility to play all three courses.

Start by trying the 54.10 M and the 58.08 M. The M grind is designed more for individuals looking to play shots with an open club face. As well, it has more bounce than some of the other low bounce grinds such as the T. The M could be an ideal combination of versatility and a little more bounce.

As always, it is best to see a local fitter and hit the different grinds, but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

    Take care,

    Bubba

Thanks for the reply.  I'll see if they have demos of the M grind available for me to demo.
