I switched from the ProV1 to AVX this summer. At 67 I was noticing a gradual decrease in distance with my AP3's. Honestly gained 5-6 yards on the mid irons. Wedges a slight increase. As for the reduced spin, it has been a non factor. The AVX checks up really well. I'm happy for the switch.

Thanks for all the info guys. I play a lot in the wind so I like to flight the ball lower. Main reason I have a 915D3 at 8.5 loft. I work at a course and have found a couple AVX. I use the Pro V1 now. Will b giving the AVX a try next year. Most of the course I play not a big deal about spinning the ball back. Just need it to stop. Golf season over here in Iowa.
  3. 0 handicap.

I've tried all the Titleist balls and finally settled on the pro v1. I found it was better. I hit the ball very high and my length is farther than normal. Hit my drives on average 295. Pitching wedge I hit 140. Work my way down with a 52, 56, 58. Found having more wedges and hitting them distances that my full swing gets really turns your short game into a more effective and lower scoring average than other clubs. What I'm saying is carry more wedges and learn how far they go with your full swing. Back to the AVX it goes much lower and shorter than the pro v1 or pro v1x which I have found. A lot shorter. But ilbad shits aren't amplified. So basically if you can afford to lose a little distance for more control. Then do it. Hope this helps. Cheers
  4. You said you have tried all the Titleist balls... wonder if you have tried the Titleist Velocity "VISI White" ball? I've hit all the Titleist balls and this one is by far the best ball.
The Visi white is not just a sprayed on finish... it's a process they use to give it the finish and, In my opinion, that process gives it a very nice "softer" feel but still goes hot and long off the driver.

I moved from ProV1 to AVX mid to late 2018 , as others have said lower flight of the tee but the bad shots left to right are not nearly as bad , didn’t notice much difference around the green but that’s probably just me.
  6. I carry a 9.6 and tried a sleeve, nothing special enough to switch from my preferred Pro VI ball. I am a bigger guy and compress the Pro VI at the rate that feels comfortable to me. Since I lose a ball maybe every 3rd round, price is not a driver, consistency is a better indicator for my game, an extra few yards through the bag not a big deal.

Trying AVX in yellow for first time tomorrow.
  8. I tried AVX and am making switch to them for now. I use a super low spin 9 degree driver with a HZRDUS Smoke low spin shaft. The AVX still launches high for me, but I get more carry than either pro v, and more distance. More importantly, I find that it drifts less offline than either of the others.

I assume the dimple pattern helps me here. It definitely feels different, both by touch and off the club face. I don't have issues with roll out. Mid-long irons, maybe a couple feet, but I was also at least 5 yards longer. Short iron spin on full shots was lower, which added a few yards, but still pretty much stopped on a dime.

Now, here in PNW, must of the time the year the conditions are soft, so I pretty much need low spin, longer carry for my game and turf.

Around the greens is where I hear and feel the difference. A little more role on chips, still able to spin and stop, just have to get used to a little different action on some. First round I made several long putts, also chipped one in and putted one in from off the green, so the sound and feel are something I got used to. Just feels like it comes off a little dead, but it really doesn't.
  9. I like the AVX but it's not worth the price. I hit some Titleist Velocity balls and they are nice. I found a ball one day and it was the Titleist Velocity "VISI White" ball. Hit it the rest of the day.
Got a doz. and have been playing them for a long time now... They are better than the Prov1 because of less spin and longer driver. I believe the process they use to give the ball it's "visi white" finish... also gives the ball a very nice softer feel.
I would suggest you get a sleeve and try them... 1/2 the price and plays even better.

I tried them on more than one occasion. I stayed with the Pro-V's

    - Off the tee. All I could hit was a low straight shot. I like to play a little 10 draw and got nothing.
Granted it was the same distance with post balls.
    - long irons. The way my set is I would need to add two more wedges and drop my hybrid. I could
not get my hybrid very high and it would never stop on the green.
Short irons. Spin was way less, could not work the ball very much. Would only pull straight back.
    Putting. no issues.

I'm currently a 5.5 and I just know my game with the Pro-V1. I didn't like the added distance from my iron game. My irons were almost 15 yards longer but very low. I like to be able to hit it very high when I need to but could not get these balls to get there. I also like the shot shape I have with the Pro-V's.

    Just my $0.02

Is there any word on how many Tour Pros have switched if any?

Have tried both of those balls. Me at 73, play the Prov1.
  13. 6 index. Switched to AVX in 2018 then switched back to ProV1 late 2018. While AVX did seem to minimize my side spin, my irons were flying greens and I preferred the short game control of the ProV1. Durability of the AVX also did not seem to be as good as ProV1.

A few weeks ago I posted on a Pro V1 vs AVX type thread which I am unable to locate now. I will use this thread to respond.

I have played the Pro V1 line exclusively since they came out in 2000 and I never thought I would consider making a change to another Titleist ball. Well, I am considering it now. I have played serveral rounds with the AVX and I am very impressed. All I know is it is longer off the metals and irons, by more than a little. I am a high spin, slow swing, 76 year player who shoots consistently in the low to mid-80's and this ball is longer and straighter than the Pro V1 (last generation) I currently play. I will have a difficult decision to make come spring when I will be placing my order.

Currently 6.8. I bought two dozen AVX's (one white, one yellow) when they first came out and gave them a good try. I got more distance with the irons, but found that I could not predict that distance consistently. Off the driver, I got less distance to just about the same distance. I tested the ball playing with a png G400LST driver (8.5, turned down to 7.5, R shaft), Titleist fw, hybrids, 716 APs's, and SM6 wedges (50, 54, 58). On/around the greens, for me, I did not notice much difference a I don't play a spinning shot at age 74. Putting was much the same. I went back to the Pro V1x and still play that ball as I am exceptionally happy with its performance.

  17. Tried a couple of dozen AVX then switched back to the Pro V1. Distance with the driver was about the same. AVX about half a club longer with the irons. Short game shots more to my liking with the ProV1. All in all not enough advantage to switch away from the Pro V1.

I played the AVX for the first time this past Sunday (15 Sep 2019) at Cross Creek in Temecula CA. I lost 9 balls! However, this was not due to errant shots but instead because I was over shooting the greens and into the thick sage rough! I found the AVX vastly surpassed the ProV1 in distance (10-15 yards) but the ProV1 holds the green. The increased distance, lower trajectory, and reduced stopping power of the AVX can be compensated by a steeper angle of attack with a shorter iron to once again hold the greens. Once I readjust and record my average distances, the AVX will be permanently added to my golf arsenal!

I am following up on my September 4th post. I continue to play the AVX because I received two two-ball boxes to try. I still like it, but, I need more spin to hold the greens. When I order my dozen balls in the spring, it will be the Pro V1.
  20. i had a dozen avx i liked them (loved the driving distance) went back to prov1 i felt the distance loss so went back to avx and now im being affected by not holding greens... im torn lol

Have been playing AVX this summer and love it. Less sidespin for me than ProV1x and about 5 yards longer. I hit the ball high so no worry on not enough backspin for me coming into greens. Definitely doesn’t spin like a ProV but it works better for my game.
  22. I’ve always played the ProV1Xs and switched to the new ProV1s this year. I did buy a dozen AVXs to try and I’ve found some things that I like & some I dislike.
First of all I’m currently a 4.2 and a little longer than average but not super long (9 iron-150 yds). To me the AVX is about a 1/2 club longer with my irons with much less spin (kind of hit & stop within a few inches or a little spin back). With my driver I’m about 5-10 yards longer due to a little lower flight & possibly more roll out? AVX tends to cut through in windy conditions.
All in all I do like the ProV1s better for me for my irons & around the green including putting (feels a bit softer).
I do plan on playing the AVXs in windy & wet conditions.
